In my humble, uninformed, gut feeling opinion the Jazz are going to regret this draft for a while.


I do hope I'm completely wrong and that Kanter and Burks turn out to be solid players but my skeptic gut tells me they won't.

Sure need to pull something off. By my count the Jazz have 4PFs and 3 SGs under contract and only CJ at the 3. And I don't want them to pick up the option on CJ.

I count two wings in Hayward and Burks playing practically interchangeable SG/SF positions. And Jefferson, Favors, and Kanter all about the size of most centers in the league.

But I still want to see what Sap brings back via trade.

Is Burks the next Brandon Roy?

I don't count any of those guys as real centers, despite that they are about as tall as many of the centers in the NBA. None of them are as tall as the PF on LA or Dallas, for example. Also, because only Favors plays D. But he's not really a center.
Hopefully Kanter proves me wrong and he's plays at the rim.

Someone who is especially tall, plays defense at the rim, rebounds and stays mostly around the rim on offense. Of course, it doesn't really matter whether it is our 4 or 5 who attacks the rim on offense, as long as one of them do. Same with defense. These guys are all more 4 than 5, IMO. I don't see the classic center. Guys like Bynum, Chandler, etc. There really aren't that many good ones in the NBA, which is why I liked the guys I did in this draft.

Best wing scorer in the draft
Best wing at getting to the FT line 9.7 times - next closest college player was 6.9.
4th overall among wings for true shooting percentage
6th among all wings in assists
6th among all wings in rebounds
#1 overall wing in PER 29.1.

To put it simply the Jazz needed a wing and got the best guy in the draft. And in a supposed weak draft, they got significantly better prospect at 12 than when they drafted Brew at 14 in '06.

What a great pick. Too bad we may not get to see him play next year. Effin' lockout.

And when you can get a guy that does that and does it well it can obvoiusly change the way the rest of the roster fits and the effectiveness of everyone else. I do think for as little as we saw Favors on the court it can be presumed that he is that type of player, whether we call him a 4 or a 5.

But I don't think the Jazz are going to be able to add anyone else that fits that description via trade. So the perimeter defense has to be addressed and improved, and that front court has to be broken up, especially if Memo is able to play at all this year.

Edit: just read quote from Corbin that Kanter "is a big man that plays like a big man". We can hope.

Love reading some people compare him to Brandon Roy in his ability to get a good look in short clock situations.

Based on college stats, size, athleticism, it seems like a solid comparison. We can only hope he can duplicate some of what Roy did when he was at his best in the NBA.
