I really wanted Ed Davis at the #9 based on who was available to Utah at that point. I also would have wanted Utah to take Henry or Aldrich over Hayward at that point.

Now that I've admitted it, I can sit back and enjoy being shown how wrong I was. I don't know if Hayward will turn out to have the best career out of those 4 guys, but I think so far it has looked like he's the best fit for this team.

If he proves to have the strength to fight through contact effectively, he's going to get a ton of open 15-18 footers in this offense, especially if he gets to play with Deron some. Based on what he could potentially offer the team this year I think the biggest thing he showed in summer league was how well he understood to use screens to get open, whether to curl sharply or give a fake dive to the middle before fading back to the wing/baseline. Might be the best at that for Utah since Jeff Malone.

I'm totally open to the proposition that Hayward will be a really good choice. But I have no basis to believe it. Have you been able to watch him play? Admittedly, I didn't watch the rookie league. I hope I was wrong.

I watched the games in the summer league, but what does that really mean? He's playing with bad players against bad players, and the Jazz run their team about as horribly as any I've seen, IMO. But what was obvious is that he understands the game, plays hard, is stronger/more athletic than I had thought.

But my increased hope for him has come more from how coaches and teammates have talked about him through the summer and training camp.

What's with all this talk about having to have offensive weapons off the bench, or someone to cover for Millsap's production off the bench? Sloan keeps bringing it up, the media is running with it, and other players are being asked to chime in.

How about you just don't play 5 bench guys together at the same time, and then the problem doesn't exist? Deron should only be sitting for 4-5 minute stretches and will only have 2 breaks a game. Even if AK starts at SF, he can essentially be the "sub" for Millsap fairly easily if Sloan manages his subs right. (Or maybe Sloan thinks AK should only play 25 mpg still)

It seems like a total non-issue unless Jerry is going to insist on having 4 or 5 subs in the game at the same time for long stretches.

It's amazing they could trot out a starting lineup with only 2 legitimate NBA players and actually win a few games.

So is Earl Watson the 3rd PG?

Watson has consistently played behind/after Ronnie Price through 3 games now.

I'm excited about the team this year. I doubt the results will be much different, but it's nice to see some new blood.
