Yes, that was nice. I've decided to pull for all the English-language countries against the foreign language countries. Next in line, I will pull for the Japanese-language countries. After that, whatever.

Do soccer players wear steel toed cleats? I see people crying and falling when they get kicked in the shins. Aren't they wearing pads there?

Also, isn't this the world championships? WTF is with ties? I can't understand the appeal of watching this sport.

Ties are only in group play, once out of group play there is extra time and then, if necessary, penalty shoot out.

Those damn horns have to go. How is it possible that there are that many mindless idiots to keep up that drone for two straight hours at every single game? FIFA needs to put an end to it, it's ridiculous.

Strangely enough, I mentioned to my wife this morning that Germany was likely going to break the 2 goal barrier set by South Korea in this World Cup (you'll have to believe me that I said this). I take an interest in Germany since I served my mission there.

This may sound strange to serious soccer fans, but I actually find the German brand of soccer to be one of the more palatable. When I watch Germany play, I feel as if there's some actual organization to the game as opposed to most soccer games where it seems like one big game of keep away sprinkled with a couple kicks towards the goal. Over the course of the past three world cups (including this one), Germany has scored more goals than most of, if not all, the other countries. I'll watch the US play for the same reason I sat around and watched the women's snowboard halfpipe during the Winter Olympics, nationalistic interest. But I also make it a point to watch Germany.

Nevertheless, Serbia v. Ghana and Slovenia v. Algeria continued the trend. Now out of eight games, six of them have ended up at 0-0, 1-0 or 1-1. Germany's performance notwithstanding, these scores aren't doing very much to persuade soccer haters.

Of mild interest: Salt Lake earned the 5th-highest overnight rating (10.2) for the US-England match. San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Cincinnati were the top 4.

The match earned a 9.0 overnight rating.

I always thought Germany had the reputation for playing the typical Euro brand of locking things up on D and only occasionally attacking on O, mostly on counter or with the long crosses hoping for headers. But the last two or three World Cups, Germany has played as aggressive on offense as anyone, racking up the goals. I like their style.

I watched the second half of the Denmark-Holland game this morning. Holland's always been one of my fav teams.

There are some real annoying things about soccer, but I want the soccer lovers to know I'm not a hater. I love big time soccer--World Cup or other big international events or big club games.

This is going to be a fun month.

Tommy Smith was just on Colin Cowherd, and apparently the German team got to practice with the new ball that is being used for the WC because it was manufactured by Adidas in germany. Kind of interesting.
