Same here. I've never criticized Carlino.

    • Seems like Rose has the guys playing really well down the stretch.

That lull in the middle of the year made me feel like it was kind of a lost year, but the way we're playing right now has me excited to see if we make the tourney and how we do.

      • Gonzaga with two roadies left at Pacific and SMC. Not an easy out. After losing to USD last night BYU has a chance to tie for the regular season title and get the 1 seed in the tournament (I believe tie breaker goes 1. Higher seed record 2. Lower seed record 3. RPI). Things could get interesting quickly. Gonzaga's resume isn't that great. Their non-con schedule got screwed when they lost to Dayton. They're going to be in our situation here if they drop these next two.

        • I really like the strategy of starting some of the bench players. Not only does it serve the function of absorbing that initial flurry of foul calls, but those guys are playing to keep their spot out there on the floor! It's like the Arcade Theory-- back when you had to pay a quarter to play pac man you got the most out of every second you were standing there as opposed to playing on your phone or on your Nintendo. These guys aren't playing garbage minutes and they are stepping up accordingly.

I think that kind of answers the question as to why guys like Winder weren't starting sooner. He's had a nice 3-4 game run now, but if he played like this all the time he would start. We saw the same thing out of Halford when he entered the starting lineup and he's dropped off and right now seems to be the odd man out.

It also helps that this team is desperate. We can't afford to lose so why not mix things up and go for broke? I am just stoked these guys are finally buying in and playing the defense they have always been capable of. It has never been a question of talent with this team.

            • I enjoyed last night's game, including the interview with Jeff Chatman. He seems like a great guy. It also looked like he's been eating well since graduating.

He provides and insightful and entertaining running commentary during games. I can't wait until his son plays.

There is plenty to criticize about Carlino. His game is great but has, at times, had serious warts. But there is one thing that is undeniable: Carlino is the difference maker. Without him this team is the essence of mediocre.

However, I disagree with Winder, because I believe he helps defensively and can contribute consistently at the defensive end. It appears he is working on his free throw shooting which means we could depend upon him at end of games as well. Halford can add some offensive punch but is a liability defensively.

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

There is good Carlino and bad Carlino. Good Carlino is very explosive, and provides some defensive steals. Bad Carlino shoots out of rhythm and forgets there are other players on the team and runs into traps creating a turnover for the other team. When Matty plays in control, BYU is a good team. When he does not, not so much.

I've mostly given up on dobby. outside of a streak of about 4-5 great games, he has failed to provide offensive punch. He is unreliable finishing around the rim (how many layups has he missed??) and also running the break on the off chance that he finds himself with a defensive rebound in his hands. I think dobby's biggest limitation on offensive is that he is too streaky. He was brought here to do one thing: hit outside shots. That's really it. Unfortunately, he hasn't really shown the ability to come off the bench and provide some instant offense. So if your outside shooter can't come off the bench and hit outside shots, what is the point?

I would use him at the end of games when teams will foul our players because he is a reliable free throw shooter.

Winder seems to be more reliable at the line than Halford

Winder is trending up, but Halford's FT percentage is about 85% whereas Winder is 75%. I think, overall, Winder adds more than Halford, but Halford gives me me warm feelings when he is at the line.
