He's going to be fouled a lot; so it hurts for him to be so poor at it. And it surprises me to see Carlino so erratic. My expectation is for guards to shoot a good percentage but for the frontline players to shoot poorly. I expect Austin, Mike and Worthington to clang it, but more center, forwards this side of the NBA tend to clang it. But I don't expect the guards to have a poor percentage."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Usually, best in the country in D-1 is in the high 70s. In the past, BYU has had teams in that realm. That said, the current percentage is below the mid-point of teams in the country. Truthfully though, his team loses games on D, not at the charity stripe.Originally posted by Topper View PostAren't there some seasons when the team excelled and shot better than 69%? I realize many of the teams had guys shooting in the fifties, sixties, but those weren't the guys shooting most of the free throws.
I seem to remember a few of the Cougar teams that shot in the high seventies for FTs. Perhaps I err. Thanks.

It has been poor guarding the three point line that is to be certain. They managed better tonight. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems the team is better with Carlino starting, bringing in Halford for quick points, and using Winder in there for defense, though we lack offensive creativity. The team has a lot of limited action players. Austin seems to know his role, but still struggles with fouls. Mika doesn't understand how the game will be called. The team doesn't rotate well on defense.Originally posted by KillerDog View PostUsually, best in the country in D-1 is in the high 70s. In the past, BYU has had teams in that realm. Yep, most teams that make deep tourney runs are near the top of effective field goal percentage (eFG%) allowed. Looks like BYU is #154. We don't defend the 3-point line well and that will kill you in the college game.Originally posted by KillerDog View PostUsually, best in the country in D-1 is in the high 70s. I feel like we spend too much focus on preventing dribble penetration and keeping our bigs out of using fouls on guards. When we extend our zone, like tonight, we can guard the perimeter but don't rebound as well. Also, the Zags will foul out our bigs if we do that. We have some serious skill deficiencies to be a top 34 team.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostYep, most teams that make deep tourney runs are near the top of effective field goal percentage (eFG%) allowed. Pull Tyler Haws out of this years numbers and see where the team stats are. Guys like Collinsworth and Carlino shooting under 70% is unacceptable. Its normal for the bigs to shoot a lower percentage.Originally posted by KillerDog View PostYes. The truth is, most fans are dumbasses. 70% is an acceptable team average from the charity stripe. Most people have impossible expectations based on poorly remembered statistics from their youth and non-game like anecdotes.

I hadn't been in UOP's gym before, and St. Mary's is pretty dumpy, very much a high school-like venue. Pacific's is small, but nicer than SMC's or USF's, to be sure. And it's only an hour in light traffic. Oh, and my ticket source for SMC stiffed me.Originally posted by Crockett View PostYou chose to drive out to Stockton instead of the closer Moraga?

BYU Hoops 2013-2014
I know this defies reason and logic, but I think Mika's game will benefit from the maturity he will gain on a mission. And those gains will outweigh any losses in athleticism.Originally posted by Surfah View PostAnyone else notice Mika making the choking sign after the game?

I disagree. BYU is always full of nice guys. Many times over the years I have wished for some nastiness and swagger on our teams. I hope Mika becomes more intelligent about managing his fouls, but I hope he never "matures" out of his attitude.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostI know this defies reason and logic, but I think Mika's game will benefit from the maturity he will gain on a mission. Swagger is fine. But Mika is a hothead, and it negatively impacts his play. You can have attitude and not be a dick. Hansen is a nice happy medium, IMO.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostI disagree. BYU is always full of nice guys.
