I can only speak for myself and not EFM, but it would matter a great deal. When you extend a scholarship to someone and that person declines in production because they are lazy or just a poor player then they get little sympathy. But when they overcome significant, perhaps life threatening health challenges you don't turn on them, even if they are not able to be as productive.

I just don't view it as the right thing to do and I do think that the personal circumstances matter.

I believe her scholarship is still intact, correct? She's just not on the team anymore. With so few spots available on a basketball team, it seems like leaving her on the team is a hard thing to do.

My first reaction was anger. But Alexis overcoming cancer the way she did against such incredibly long odds makes this seem trivial by comparison. I will always be proud of her.

that was my thought. I'm just happy she is alive. The unfortunate alternative was a legitimate possibility 2 years ago.

You think Judkins is turning on her? Wouldn't he have filled her position a year ago if this were the case? The timing of this is curious to me. I suspect there is more to this than Juddy being an insensitive jerk.

Well, I am sure there is more to it than that. But I doubt it will look that way from the outside. This looks like she used up her usefulness from the outside (and truthfully, Judkins may not be able to go too much into his reasoning) and was discarded. Don't know if that is the case, but I know when you push away someone who is a cancer survivior you are always going to face that perception.

Andy Katz was tweeting about how awesome it is that Dave Rose is 3 years cancer free. To celebrate Juddy dropped the cancer deadwood from the team. You really don't see what's wrong with this and how stupid BYU looks?

I agree with SJS that there is an optics problem here, but the reaction is a bit melodramatic. See cancer deadwood. I don't think Judkins or BYU looks stupid. This cancer survivor sympathy argument to me is interesting. How long does it last? One season? Two? A career? What is a coach supposed to do if a player cannot play at the same level that they did previously? I don't buy the argument that a coach is supposed to retain that athlete simply because we feel sorry for them.

We're not going to agree I guess.

So you believe that a coach has the obligation to keep the player then? Does this only extend to cancer survivors? What about players that suffer injuries like an ACL tear and aren't the same? Or does the ailment have to be life threatening to get a sympathy spot on the team?

As I understand it from what i have read, she is 'medically retired' and will keep her scholarship for her senior year, although she is off the team. Honestly this is a best case scenario for her. She has her Senior year tuition and expenses paid for her, she gets to fully rehab from a horrific disease without taxing her body to compete at a high athletic level, and the team gets to keep that 15th scholarship for an active player.

If this is the case, is this the ultimate win-win?

If she is keeping her scholarship, I pretty much agree with Surfah. It may be different if Juddy had a history of bein a jerk, but he doesn't, does he?
