He's been invited, and may have lurked a bit. I sat by him at the SCjoke of agame last night but didn't think to recruit him again. Give it a shot.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

I just saw the subject of this thread and had no idea what it was about. I popped it open, and it just so happens I saw the score just a few minutes ago.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI'm surprised there is no thread for tonights game.
My condolances.
At least you revel in the fact your other team beat the Utes at home.

BYU is in a difficult spot. We are missing some key elements at every guard position.
Carlino -- Can shoot but is in a slump. Hasn't done a good job of scoring off penetration until the second half at SMC. Is an average man defender and a poor defender in the zone. Is an aggressive passer but turns the ball over a lot because he doesn't pick his spots.
Cusick -- Can shoot but his release is so slow he is almost never open. Can't create separation off the bounce at all and is too small to do anything without substantial separation. Is an average man and zone defender. Is not offensively aggressive in any capacity.
Zylstra -- Can shoot but is in a slump. Is out of control on 75% of his penetrations which gets him in turnover and foul situations. Is a good zone defender who can defend multiple spots in the zone. Can rebound out of the 2 or 3 spot but does a poor job of staying in front of the quick/undersized 2s in the WCC.
Winder -- Is an extremely streaky shooter. Has good defensive quickness on the ball but goes to sleep off the ball and in the zone. Rebounds well for his size at the 2 but he's tiny so it doesn't mean much. Is often out of control on the bounce resulting in turnover situations.
Harrison -- Consistently poor shooter. Can penetrate but seems scared to. Can defend on the ball but is awful in the zone. Excellent athleticism but turnover prone because he is young and trying to do too much at times.
Abuou -- Is an ok shooter but is in a slump. Thinks he is a deep ball threat when he ought to be a penetration threat. Penetrates out of control and gets himself in turnover/foul situations as a result. Defends and rebounds very well at either 2 or 3 spot.
Rogers -- Is a good shooter but is in a slump and is not in game shape. Can also get to the rim off the bounce but is tentative since his injury. Is a bit of an offensive black hole. Cannot guard an inanimate object in man defense and purely focuses on steals in the zone resulting in lots of late close outs and missed steals.
Basically, our problem is that we have good guys at the 4 and 5 spot but our wings and guards all have serious deficiencies in their games. Because they all are flawed, if I was Rose I would change up the starting lineup and the primary rotation. I'd consider moving Cusick into the starting lineup as the 2. He would provide us with additional quickness and can shoot well enough for the 2. He could also help us when people pressure our perimeter by giving us better ball handling. I would move Zylstra to the 6 spot and make him my first heat check guy. Brock, go score. If you don't, come out. I'd make Rogers my other heat check guy and do the same with him. The other potential is to go with Winder at the 2 in an effort to improve defense and hopefully find offense from him. Most of all, we need a 6th man who can score at a wing and we don't have it. We need to find it. Another plan is to change our mentality entirely. Move Abuou to the 2, Noah to the 3, Brandon to the 4 and Austin to a starting spot. We could create some interesting things doing that and play some great zone defense if Noah and Brandon are willing to hustle (I don't know if Brandon is).
Whatever he tries, Rose needs to do something soon.

Whats crazy to me is that Rose has fallen in love with that weak ass zone defense. He used to always play man to man. Now, they play so much zone defense they have forgotten how to play a good man help defense.
But against St. Mary's, a team that passes and shoots well, we start out in a zone defense and fall behind quickly. No one on St. Mary's scares me enough to have to play zone, and I am surprised that Rose felt the need to go with it in the first place.

I nearly flipped (ok I flipped) when I saw him stay in it for two more trips following the 4th make by the chucker. I thought it was an egregious coaching error. I think he began to fall into the trap of thinking it prevented his bigs from getting in early foul trouble and it ultimately cost BYU any chance of maintaining contact (Poor offensive execution didn't help either).Originally posted by Tone Loc View PostWhats crazy to me is that Rose has fallen in love with that weak ass zone defense. The funny thing about the second one is that you can't even see or hear anything Randy Bennett or the bench was saying/doing at the time the T was called. I think there were multiple coaches/players standing up after being told to sit down.Originally posted by DU Ute View Post
The refs were bad, no doubt. But that second one isn't necessarily an example.

He had a hard time dribbling when chuck got after him. He isnt a one on one player. If chuck and winder guard him the whole time there isnt a chance he goes for 30. He hasnt went for 30 all year, and he wouldnt do it against 2 of our best man to man defenders.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Postwithout that zone, bellalugosi would have scored 30 points.

He panicked a lot when he got double teamed. But the reality is, most of the possessions Chuck was on him tight, Chuck ended up getting abused. He would go past him and get to the key almost every time. I was getting so pissed. Charles is such a good on ball defender, but then mouthguard would make a weak fake, Charles would overplay it, and mouthguard would go right past him.Originally posted by Tone Loc View PostHe had a hard time dribbling when chuck got after him. Also, can we not get a five seconds call?

We're 18-6. It makes my embarrassing behavior of Saturday night even more embarrassing really. No Jimmer, No Jax, no 30 win season.Originally posted by fusnik View PostDave Rose should have gotten on the PA and yelled at the student body for throwing shit onto the court.
Besides that what can you do?
