I miss Dave Rice.

I hear this repeatedly but I'm not sold. The talent has played as much a part as anything. That and inconsistent pg play. I realize Rice is credited with the defense but the zone has always been bad, it's just that Jackson was exceptional in the passing lanes and Zylsicder is not.

Rice is credited with the offense. Our best defense was under Heath Schroyer.

Reportedly, the same was said about Alex Jensen, minus the legacy factor. All that did was switch the fortunes of both programs for over a decade.

Boylen had to sell out to go after Haws. The potential reward outweighed whatever risk inflicted on the program. And Jimmy is still the coach if he lands C.J. Wilcox and Joe Burton, and gets Marshall Henderson to shape up. Which is too damn bad, because that's a stud trio in the P-12 that would win a lot of games.

Odd conclusion - I don't have a ton of Utah-specific basketball knowledge, but Jensen's recruitment is one thing I know a fair amount about as couple of his high school teammates are good friends of mine who I roomed w/ (and played intramural ball with) at the Y.

I recall them saying that Alex chose Utah (a) because Reid assumed he would commit and made little effort and (b) because Reid was a borderline autistic misanthrope.

Reid's semi-sociopathic tendencies (I heard some spectacular stories from Gary Trost about Roger's unique manipulations and accusations) combined w/ Majerus's coaching genius switched the fortunes of the two teams for a decade.

Then I'm hearing mixed messages about his roll.

Tonight a minor issue I had with Rose was following BYU's late push. Up just 3 SD calls a timeout, undoubtedly to calm the team down but also to run a set to break the 1-3-1. I thought Rose would have recognized this and for that posession countered with a matchup zone or M2M. Instead they came in, executed perfectly and the momentum was gone.

Don't know why there is a thumbs down in my post.

This just further supports my wait and see theory with Dave Rice. Until he actually does something with a team full of his recruits, he hasn't proven a damn thing.

His teams have underachieved both years he has coached there. He has now lost to an 11 seed and a 12 seed in the dance. 2 more seasons like that, and you probably will have a shot at bringing Rice back to BYU.

Didn't say I wouldn't trade him for Kodiak. I don't think either of them have proven much of anything. I do know that Rice inherited a program in great shape with a shit ton of talent and Kodiak inherited a dumpster fire (the correct usage of the term unlike referring to UCLA as a dumpster fire) with little talent. You swap their positions and their records are probably swapped.

Also, UNLV is a great place to recruit to, Utah not so much. Not sure Rice would do much better as a recruiter than Kodiak.

Absolutely not. This is an idiotic, delusional analysis. Mike Krzyzewski was 38-47 his first three hears at Duke. Is Rice a better coach? I could have gone 51-19 with Rice's personnel in the MWC. Just give those future NBAers the ball and tell them to have fun and they go 51-19 and lose in the NCAA tournament and fail to win the MWC tournament ON THEIR OWN FLOOR! Big deal. So far in recruiting he's been trading on goodwill associated with Jerry Tarkanian (I'm assuming Rice's program is clean). How long will that last? He wouldn't be recruiting to Utah that five star personnel he's been wasting. I've seen no evidence he can coach at all. For us, he'd have been another bad hire.

Utah doing well too -- 4th in the PAC-12 with 8611 per home game. In conference only Arizona, archrival Colorado, and UCLA had better attendance. Way to go Utes!
