2011-2012 BYU Basketball Thread

I don't think the schedule is terrible. We have likely 3 tourney teams in Utah State, Wisconsin, and VA Tech. It's too bad Utah and Oregon suck. Baylor is middle of the Big 12.

looking at this, I think it's a pretty kick ass non conference schedule. I look at a lot of ACC schools and their non conference schedule and theirs aren't much better, imo. Check out UNC's non conference schedule last year.

So I'd say that that's a better schedule, but only by a game or two. Given the proximity of their opponents and the history of UNC's program, scheduling becomes that much easier, but their average non conference schedule isn't that much better than ours.

I agree that the non-conference isn't horrible but let's not forget what conference we now play in. IMO it's a little too soft for a WCC team. On a positive note, it should offer a nice soft landing post-Jimmer.

I hope so. I don't mind it next year, but if our OOC schedule is like this every year, we will have a hard time getting good seeds. It doesn't need to be drastically different; replace BYU-H and CS-San Marcos with a couple of solid teams and you've got a decent schedule.

On the plus side, I will definitely be in Blacksburg!

I was actually surprised that Rose agreed to playing Oregon before Carlino gets elgible, my guess is that game will be nationally televised and it would have benefitted BYU much more to have put that off for two more weeks. Utah State, Oregon and likely Wisconsin all before Carlino gets elgible and then Baylor, Va Tech, Gonzaga x 2 (3?) and St Mary's x 2 (3?) all after.

I agree that the schedule is not real difficult this upcoming season because of how young BYU will be , especially on the perimeter. I think BYU is likely to lose at least 4 OOC games next year out off the following: @ USU, Nevada in Chicago, Bradley or Wisconsin in Chicago, Oregon in SLC and @ Va Tech and perhaps one more. If BYU can get 23 regular season victories, either 10 OOC and 13 WCC or 11 OOC and 12 WCC, beat Gonzaga at home and get to the WCC tourney final they would finish the year with 25 wins and an RPI likely between 35-40. Given their recent history and NCAA tourney success tmy guess is they would be seeded anywhere from 9-11.

This is a rebuilding year for BYU and if they can accomplish the above it would be huge for BYU and cement my opinion that Dave Rose is one of the top college basketball coaches out there. Further, it would put BYU on a trajectory for some really good years the following 3 seasons. To be blunt I am not sure I am expecting that this year. But it would be spectacular if Rose could squeeze an NCAA tourney bid out this year.

I wish I could make it to Blacksburg. Funny that I never attended a men's basketball game while I was there (they sucked). I did attend a couple women's games - I can't remember why.

I agree. Well, I think 25 regular season wins and getting to the WCC final would get BYU in.

so does Josh Sharp fill the final scholly? will he get to go overseas with the team? Is Rose going to have a walk-on on the roster this year? He didn't last year. I really wouldnt mind seeing Zylstra go back to walk-on status and grabbing a juco point guard to help feel the void until Carlino becomes eligible.

And anything less than that, they don't deserve to get in anyway. That said, if they do have a subpar 17 to 23 win regular season, it will be a lot easier to pull off an upset or two and win the automatic bid in the WCC than it would have been in the MWC or say in a BCS conference such as the PAC.

This is the reason the WCC move doesn't bother me much - the college basketball playoff is the great equalizer. Speaking of success in college basketball, the Dance is everything and everybody has an equal shot to get there.
