Incidentally, I checked the Texas papers, too. The Statesman ran the story under "No. 3 BYU Loses Forward to Rules Infraction" - the fact that he had sex was relegated to a parenthetical aside several paragraphs in. The Dallas Morning News didn't run the story at all.

I just don't think this story is near as big as you and the rest of the bubbleheads seem to think it is.
It was on the Today show, saying it was because he had sex. There are no riots in the middle east over it, but I'd say it's way bigger than the Utah bubble. Having said that, if BYU were playing at the Ute's level this year, it wouldn't crack a headline outside of Utah.

I said from the beginning that the pop media has a prurient interest in this story. In fact I was the one that pointed out yesterday that it had hit the front page of GoogleNews. And Lord knows that the Brits have had an odd fascination with our puritanicalism for ages.

But I disagree with the assertion that significant numbers are paying attention. In spite of this massive media exposure you guys are describing, nothing about BYU or Davies is in the top twenty google searches today. Yesterday it managed to crack the top ten, coming in just behind searches for "yellow sac spiders" and just ahead of "Rodney King."

It's a story, yes. But outside of a couple of niche markets, nobody really cares.

HERE is an article in Slate, titled: Premarital sex at BYU: How Common is it?

There was also a Huff Post article the other day.

I trust you did not mean this as a sick joke and the link is now changed. The story I opened up to really puts all this in perspective.

Babs, as Mormons we are a little bit insular and frequently imagine that people take much more notice of us in general than they remotely do. I am guilty of this thinking at times too. In point of fact, while the profile has become higher, a large percentage of people who are not from Utah or sports fans can't distinguish between Quakers and Mormons or even the U and BYU.

You gotta admit that Witness is a great film though.

Eli Lapp: This gun of the hand is for the taking of human life. We believe it is wrong to take a life. That is only for God. Many times wars have come and people have said to us: you must fight, you must kill, it is the only way to preserve the good. But Samuel, there's never only one way. Remember that. Would you kill another man?
Samuel Lapp: I would only kill the bad man.
Eli Lapp: Only the bad man. I see. And you know these bad men by sight? You are able to look into their hearts and see this badness?
Samuel Lapp: I can see what they do. I have seen it.
Eli Lapp: And having seen you become one of them? Don't you understand? What you take into your hands, you take into your heart. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing. Go and finish your chores now.
                      Samuel Lapp: Yes Grossvater.
I love than scene. Eli Lapp was a great movie character.

According to a cousin of mine, a local radio talk show in Phoenix--a politics show, not a sports show--led with the story. Talked about it all morning. Weird.

Pretty bad when UD is the voice of reason on the board. Of course, he's about as far from the bubble as you can get.

I asked around in my large section today. Several had heard of the story but only one knew which two knew which school it was associated with, and only one knew about the Mormon connection. One kid thought it had happened at Baylor.
