Positive Press vs. Negative Press - who won?

Ok, there's a ton of negative press, people complaining about BYU, what they have done in the Brandon Davies situation. How draconian we are in our ways etc.

However, there has also been a ton of good press, how it's great to see a university stick to it's principles, etc.

So, in light of all the negative press and the positive press...who has won in the eye of public perception? (or winning)

Negative press is the run away winner. The positive press is based on BYU keeping it's own rules. Rules that almost no one agrees with, and even fewer feel the punishment for breaking those rules fit the crime.

Much like people have a certain amount of respect for the Amish for sticking with their backwards ways. Their ways are not respected even though they stick to them.

Their parents were much less likely to run into the story.

Borg, keep in mind that even though in Utah this is the headline news story on every paper and every telecast, that in the rest of the country the story isn't going to get a whole lot of attention from anybody other than sports fans. This isn't Romney-wears-funny-underwear. There are no jokes on the Late Show and no op-eds in the Wall Street Journal.

It was on the CBS Evening News last night - they don't typically do sports, but reported on this. It was generally a positive report. They did name Davies as the star of the team, etc., etc, etc. Not that Davies isn't important to the team - but I can think of another player that is more important.

It looks like it might've been on the national morning news today too.

I loved their Dan Jones poll. Even worse was their interpretation of the poll results in the KSL article.

The answer to this question depends almost entirely on whether someone lives inside Utah or outside of Utah.

On a national level, it's impossible to say that the press has been negative. Every major news outlet has gone with the same basic storyline: In this era of universities breaking every rule they reasonably can in order to get ahead, BYU is a place of integrity. Even if their rules are archaic.

Like I have been saying, this is the type of "news" that would make the governments of Iran or Libya proud.

I thought my wife was crazy when she insisted we switch from the DNews to the Tribune last year, but as usual she is just smarter than me about this stuff.
