    Just because the spotlight is gone doesn't mean the program is dark. I have no concerns about the future of the program; Rose has it on the right track. That said, BYU sports don't often get the spotlight like they're getting with Jimmer this season. We should enjoy it while it's happening, and not pretend like this is an every day (or season, or generation) thing.

      Absolutely. I take nothing for granted with respect to Jimmer or even Coach Rose. This is a wild ride and I'm loving it. To that point, I've posted several times that our national prominence in basketball is in it's infancy and I believe that. I think the best part for me though is I feel a bit more secure right now that it's not as fleeting as other peaks in BYU basketball history. Who knows what might happen but I'm drinking the program koolaid and not just the Jimmer-aid as I'm sure you are too.

        I really believe that 4 trends are converging favorably for BYU.

        1.) I think Dave Rose is content to stay in Provo and build a program. I doubt he coaches more than 10, perhaps 15, years, but I think he is in a position to lift BYU as a program.

        2.) Changing demagraphics within the LDS base.

        3.) Raising of the bar has it more socially acceptable for kids to choose to not serve missions. I think it is becoming less and less of a cultural expectation.

        4.) One and dones/two and dones. That trend is a serious equalizer for mid majors that recruit good players but very few with NBA potential.

            Not to belabor this point too much but I think it's even becoming 'less of a cultural expectation' in the football program. People inside the church but outside of the Cougar football fanbase might not like it, but I dig it when BYU athletes feel their 'calling' is to play straight through. I also dig the 2-deep roster.

              I agree. I thought it was just an anomaly a few years ago with the hoop team, but I really think what we are seeing is that it is becoming less of a cultural expectation. Before the raising of the bar anyone who wanted to go could, and conversely all were expected to go. I am sensing that it is not nearly as expected as it was 10 years ago.

              I still think many will go but my guess is we will see fewer and fewer of the elite go.

                      OK, the secret is out. I don't watch SportsCenter much. And I may be the only person here who didn't watch any of the Utah's Fiesta Bowl or Sugar Bowl. And I definitely didn't watch SportsCenter after either of those. This is off topic and doesn't justify my stupid post earlier, but still...
