mpfunk's short list of coaching candidates. I've learned our proper place in society from cougjunkie and I'm going to stick to realistic candidates only.

1) Norm Parrish - head coach SL Community College. You got to start big, but he is likely to turn us down.
2) Zeffie Nelson - BYU Men's Basketball Secretary. She may be out of our league too, but she once had a conversation with Dave Rice about his top 10 offense, so she should be able to bring that to Utah. She also talked to Jackson Emery on a recruiting trip and may be able to get us Nick Emery. I would like to shoot high with Mike Hall for Tim Lacomb but we now they would turn us down

3) Dave Bliss - great fit for our lack of class university. I'm hoping that no one is murdered on his watch. We all know that Majerus was dirty anyway, so we have no problem with these type of people. He may turn us down in favor of coaching a high school team.
4) Marshall Henderson's dad - he is a high school coach somewhere. Don't know if he is any good, but high school coaches seem about what we can get.

This is brilliant.

First, watch the last 1:00 of this bit from 2008 - an example of what Boylen's coaching produced in an experienced set of players, few of whom are his recruits:

Now watch this Majerus team. Big Rick had retired a few weeks earlier and his assistant was coaching, but this is a trademark Majerus team moment. Watch the discipline of the players:

Now, it's not fair to compare one great moment with one clunky moment. I just thought the difference in the court sense of the players in both clips was remarkable. I don't blame Boylen for the downhill slide between the first level of play and the second, but I don't think he has stopped it at all. If anything it has gotten worse.

I rewatched (in about 15 min) the game from Saturday and I have to say I think Boylen did the absolute best job he could have given the talent of this team. The problem: He's responsible for the subpar talent on this team.

He implemented a good plan utilitizing the best player with size and speed to guard Jimmer, he limited BYU's touches by slowing the game down to a crawl, and he filtered 3 defenders to Jimmer every time he broke the 3-pt barrier. He doesn't get a pass because playing not to lose by 30 is not really winning but he did the best he could with what he had.

If any of you ever saw the movie Drowing Mona, I think this dialogue is appropriate in this case for Boylen:

Chief Wyatt Rash: My mother always used to say, "When life hands you potatoes, make potato salad."

Mona Dearly: Yeah? Well life handed me a pile of shit. What am I supposed to do with that?

There's a poll in that article asking "Whom would you rather see hired if Utah changes coaches?" After about 400 votes, Stew Morrill leads Mark Few 22.8% to 12% respectively; "Other" is the overall leader at 24.6%.
