I really don't see how it's significant, though. Like you say, for every RM who doesn't care anymore there are three more who beast out. Bottom line is that if you're a competitor nothing can take that edge away- no mission, no marriage, no kids."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

Haws had a great career. So did Devin Durrant. Shawn Bradley even lasted for a while in the NBA and Hansen did well for himself.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostMangum has only been home a month or two. He could recover that drive. Don't give up so easily. It seems to me that Taysom Hill recovered his intensity.
We already start off at a disadvantage athlete wise. We have less margin to lose a really good player to lack of desire.
That being said, I totally support any young man who chooses to serve. I also don't have a problem with those who don't and can understand new circumstances that might make one re-evaluate.

He could put that noble faithfulness back on his sleeve with one simple decision.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostIt has been interesting to see this develop. If the chatter we read is correct it appears that the family is moving towards/moved towards the decision to not have Frank take a mission trip. That really illuminates how easy it is for nobodies to be noble, virtuous and faithful. Back when they didn't think a one and done deal was feasible I believe they were very outspoken about priesthood responsibilities and whatnot. Now that the financial reality of the asset that Frank's future has become such decisions get significantly more murkier. It is much more difficult to wear your noble faithfulness on your sleeve when there are real life sacrifices, perhaps very large ones, to be made and not the made up kind that most of us willingly pretended existed.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Right. It's the wearing it on the sleeve, as Goat put it, that makes this case interesting. Many have gone or not gone. But I can't think of any high profile recruits who have stated so strongly in public that they're going and then not go.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostHe could put that noble faithfulness back on his sleeve with one simple decision.

A commit when a kid is 15 years old and doesn't yet know how good he is, I can understand if he opts to open things up to other offers. As much as I really want him to go to BYU. I don't care so much about that. If Dave Rose can be so gracious about it (per what the family has said), I think as just a fan, I should be able to give him some leeway there as well.Originally posted by scottie View PostAnd what about the fact that he made a commitment to BYU.
But I think from his perspective, the mission thing would be a much bigger deal. It's one thing to say that you're thinking about a mission, but it's another to tell national basketball writers that it's "non-negotiable" knowing fans all over the country and college basketball coaches are going to read it.
What I'm wondering about is how his parents (and maybe mostly his dad, assuming his mom may not be a big sports fan) would seem to be so naive about this whole process. Maybe they haven't been, but it sure comes across this way if you follow the timeline based on what has been solidly reported, not just internet rumors, but from what has come out in published stories by those who have interviewed them. I can understand how at age 15 they wouldn't yet know how good he was. What's weird to me is how even after the national camps and getting calls and texts from the likes of the original Coach K, they still tell national basketball writers about how committed they are to the mission. But I don't quite get how that changes just a few weeks later. I'm sure the recruiting has intensified, but it was already pretty intense, I would have thought, back when they last stated the mission intentions just a few weeks ago. Did they not realize at the time that they were that close to re-thinking it?Last edited by BlueK; 06-23-2015, 12:37 PM.

I will also add that as fans we have no problem welcoming in a player who stays uncommitted almost to the end, then commits to Ohio State within a few days of signing day, then realizes his decision didn't feel right and changes his mind and signs with us. In terms of planning and general pain in the neck factor, what Dastrup did is far more painful to Ohio State than what Frank did to BYU in reopening his recruitment.Originally posted by scottie View PostAnd what about the fact that he made a commitment to BYU.Last edited by BlueK; 06-23-2015, 01:09 PM.

Heh- I don't know if Ohio State fans get angsty like BYU fans over a highly touted recruit. I kind of roll my eyes at Frank Jackson- his goal posts seem to move the more attention he gets. That's fine- he's going to do what's best for him- not BYU fans. The eye rolling comes in at the commitments he has publicly made that were completely unnecessary that he now has to pretend didn't happen. 'Whoops! J/K- didn't know I was this awesome when I emphatically said that thing before!'"I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! Agreed. It's that so many of his statements (and it's hard to know how much is him and how much is his dad) seem to be so decisive-sounding when they're made only to suddenly become something completely different within a pretty short amount of time.Originally posted by Commando View PostHeh- I don't know if Ohio State fans get angsty like BYU fans over a highly touted recruit. Let the record state I am neither noble nor faithful. I believe a mission is a phenomenal experience and if Frank were to come up to me while watching some exciting Idaho 1-A summer league hoops in Butte Pirate county and asked "Yo Goat what do think about me serving a mission?" I would say "Frank, I think they are a fabulous experience and I think you should go even though you know it will negatively impact your basketball playing future." But if he were to ask if it were up to me and the options were: 1.) Go to BYU and no mission or 2.) Go elsewhere and serve a mission my choice would be 1.) every day of the week and six times on Saturday! If he recommits to BYU the fan in me hopes he doesn't go but I would still tell him he should if he were to ask me.Originally posted by scottie View PostAnd what about the fact that he made a commitment to BYU.
He was not in Butte Pirate County, however. But the Panthers were and the Bulldogs beat them down. In fact the Panthers only had a Varsity squad so I wonder if numbers are heading toward a problem in that heavenly corner of the PRBC. Especially given the proximity as Arco ain't far from Carey. Acey Shaw is actually getting more mobility as well. Life is a good for a small town ranch boy turned ESPN Rock Star.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

apparently Frank's dad just publicly congratulated him on facebook for his Duke offer. Checking the past he hasn't done that for any of this other offers. Hmmm....I could be totally wrong, but I suspect his dad is possibly getting carried away more by all the attention and notoriety than Frank is. But who knows. My hunch is that Frank listening more to mom here turns out better for BYU than listening to dad. ;-)

Ah, that's what you meant by "I spent the weekend in the shadows of the Pride of Dietrich, ID!" Was that a boys or girls event? You must have a kid(s) playing.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostLet the record state I am neither noble nor faithful. It was girls and our numbers are not real high in our incoming freshman and sophomore girls classes. My daughters group, the 8th grade class, is both big and good so it appears to me that the coaches have already made a conscious decision to go into a youth movement after this year. Hence, they took 4 8th graders to play on the JV team. They played the girls pretty equal for the round robin but once they seeded the teams and went into a single elimination tourney they played their 4 8th graders predominately and sat the girls that will comprise this year's JV team.Originally posted by scottie View PostAh, that's what you meant by "I spent the weekend in the shadows of the Pride of Dietrich, ID!"
