  • So is this kind of like when Nate Austin and Ian Harward committed?

That's about how I see it, although with Stew Morrill having demonstrated interest, I am slightly more excited. Like find money in the pocket of your jacket you haven't worn in 3 months and instead of $1 it's $5.

Stew Morill is interested In about every BYU recruit and many would have had more success at USU.

              • Does anyone know when Jamal Aytes is going to make a decision? I was under the impression he was taking official visits to Gonzaga and Kansas State this week. Is there any date he must make that decsion by or is that school dependent?

FTR, I expect him to go elsewhere but I just want that final nail in the coffin hammered before I start telling everyone that I was right about Kyle Collinsworth playing the 4 at BYU. BYU going into next year with its bigs being Mika, Austin, Sharp, Worthington will require KC to play a lot of 4, IMO. I would think Austin will get the lions share of the minutes, but with both 5's being true freshman, there are going to be times that KC will log plenty of time at the 4.

Also who is this kid from Granger High named Makol Mawhein? I doubt he will go to BYU but is he currently considering the Y? He sounds like he will be a good one.

Aytes is expected to make his decision early next week and as of this morning he said BYU was still very much in the picture.

Makol Mawein is going to be very good, he is LDS and close friends with Jesse Wade, Dalton Nixon and Brekkot Chapman. I actually think he will end up at Utah.

Who are you considering the 5s? Austin is a Junior and he will start at the 5 along side the freshman Mika at the 4 (my guess). Sharp will fill in at both spots off the bench. But you are right that the big man position is way too thin. Very concerning with any injuries (and even without). Probably see a lot of 3 guard lineups with Hawes as the lone forward.

I think Mika will start at the 5 and Austin at the 4. I think Mika is both bigger and stronger. Hence, I think he is more equipped to play post defense. Offensively, I think Austin has far more range and is a perimeter player and will play on the perimeter while Mika will be BYU's primary post player. I do think Austin will see some time at the 5 as well as a backup but his primary position will be at the 4. I think Sharp will play at the 4 as well as Collinsworth but I think Collinsworth will be as good a 4, and likely better, than Sharp at the 4. I also believe that Skyler Halford will be better at the 2 and 1 than Sharp will be at the 4. If BYU lands Aytes I could see him getting 15-20 mpg at the 4 and that could loosen it up for Kyle to spend more time on the perimeter. My instinct is that Luke Worthington will basically play the enforcer role that Kaufusi played last year and will get into games to get his five statements/fouls and BYU will get little more from him. I would not expect more than 5-8 mpg from him. So assuming BYU does not land Aytes in games where either Mika or Austin get in foul trouble I see Collinsworth getting many minutes at the 4. The decision Rose will have to make is whether or not putting Worthington or Halford/Winder/Bartley on the court makes sense. So my 9 that play significant minutes if BYU lands Aytes are: Mika, Austin, Aytes, Carlino, Haws, Collinsworth, Halford, Bartley/Winder with Sharp and Worthington seeing some spot duty on occasion. If there is no Jamal Aytes I see it as: Mika, Austin, Sharp, Collinsworth, Haws, Carlino, Halford, Bartley and Winder with Worthington getting spot duty.

I also think Austin will always be the first guy off the bench when he is on the bench and there is a timeout called. He is what one might call a "team guy." Kid should have been a Norman Rockwell model...he fires me up!

GN, you are a stubborn sonofabitch, aren't you? Despite the fact that I've told you for years (and later Dave Rose backed me up - and he has some clout in this program) KC will be a 1, you cling to the notion that he will spend significant time at the 4. As soon as Aytes commits, any possibility of KC spending even the smallest amount of time at the 4 will go out the window.

Bronco and I. I look at as a question of getting the best 5 players on the court. I could care less where he has the ball on offense but on defense he is going to cover a great deal of 4's. I just don't see the logic in playing Josh Sharp and Luke Worthington significant minutes when Kyle C can cover opposing 4's and BYU can put Skyler Halford, Winder or Frank Bartley on the court.

But if Aytes signs, which I am not expecting, that could change. I think Aytes, Mika and Austin could take the majority of the 80 minutes at the 4 and 5 with Sharp and Worthington getting some spot duty.

Interesting. You think Mika is taller than Austin? Do you think Austin played the 4 last year? Do you think Austin will play more of a perimeter role than last year? I would have thought all the answers are no.

I believe Austin played both positions but the 4 more. Whenever Davies was in the game Nate played on a bottom corner of a zone defense and when in man he rarely covered the opponents player who was primarily a back to the basket post player. Offensively, he wasn't on the perimeter like a point guard or wing, but rarely did he play in the deep post with his back to the basket. In my world he is very obviously a big man who is most comfortable scoring facing the basket and on defense he is not a good defender in the post.

As far as who is taller between he and Mika, I will leave that for Jay as I pretty sure he has stood next to both. However, I think Mika is bigger in that I believe that even if he isn't as tall, his arms, legs, ass, chest, neck etc are made of bigger muscles and I think that will aid Mika in being a better post defender. By post I am referencing the opposing "5" or center whose primary role on offense is to play a back to the basket post game.
