  • Probably a game that we should have won by more, but a win is a win. While Vilanova doesn't look like a great team, Kenpom has them at #51 which would be a Quad 2 win on a neutral court, but if they can get into top 50 it becomes a Quad 1 win.

Some notes about stats since it's a new season:
    • In my box score I moved TO to be right after Assists since that's how Yahoo Sports is organizing it. ESPN is showing it in a completely different way compared to past years, and I'm trying to completely avoid ESPN right now if I can help it
    • PER is my own calculation for Player Efficiency Rating that I've developed over the years and I continue to tweak it. In general, 10+ is a good game and 20+ is a really good game
    • GSc is Hollinger's measure of productivity, on a scale of 0-40. It's a pretty well known formula, although quite basic and outdated IMO.
    • TS% is True Shooting Percentage. It basically shows how many points per FGA a player is making, so if you are good at 3s and FTs, it really helps your percentage, and yes, it can be above 100%. I only award the best/worst to players that have made at least 3 shot attempts in a game.
    • ORtg is Offensive Rating; a complicated calculation that estimates a player's total offensive contribution, including points from shots, assists, and offensive rebounds.
    • DRtg is Defensive Rating, the same as above except it measures a player's total defensive contribution.
    Observations from the game:
    • Saunders was sick and missed the morning shoot around, not sure how much that really impacted though
    • I lost count of how many times I heard that AJ likes to drive left. I got it. That being said, he does need to learn to drive to the right (yes I know he's left handed)
    • We should have rebounded better
    • We got very few assists - per another comment, yeah, we were playing too much hero ball
    • Our own TOs were very low, so that's great. Just 3 TOs is fantastic.
    Awards
    • Player of the Game - Richie Saunders. He had the best PER and had an all-around good game, which was great to see after a subpar two exhibition games. He could have shot better (47.4% TS%), but his rebounds, assists, steals, and no TOs is what won him this award
    • Best GSc - Dybansta - He took over when everyone else was cold. A few misses at the rim hurt him (although he wasn't the only one guilty of that). 3 assists to zero TOs shows he's a good ball handler. Gotta hit those FTs.
    • Best TS% - Keita. I'll take 11 points on 80% shooting every night.
    • Best ORtg - Ketia. When you're efficient on scoring and grab offensive rebounds, you win this award
    • Best DRtg - Mboup. I like what I see from him and I think he's capable of doing more offensively too.
    • Struggled to Perform - Dawson Baker. 5 points, but nothing else in 15 minutes of play. If all you are is a shooter/scorer, then you better be really good at it.
    • Worst GSc - Also Baker
    • Worst TS% - Wright III. He's gotta be smarter about trying to score against 3 big guys. He can do it sometimes....Also, can he hit a 3?
    • Worst ORtg - Mboup. Didn't attempt a shot or get an offensive rebound.
    • Worst DRtg - Baker.

        • Perusing twitter, it seems people are convinced that Keita's injury was just a kick in the shin and not a hyperextension of the knee. That's great news if true.

It only seems that way because they did.

I was surprised how loud it got, Maybe the arena is designed to produce that kind of crowd noise.

I thought we did well. As noted, they definitely need to play better as a team, but I'm confident that will come. It was the same last season. It was so frustrating that Villanova won the lucky break battle by a zillion IMO. It seemed like we would fight hard for loose balls only for it to land into the hands of Villanova for a good shot. Karma needs to turn that around as the season progresses.

                  Observations:
                  • mrs. myboynoah saw a naked lady getting arrested by the police outside the arena on our way in. How did I miss that?
                  • Lots of UofA fans there,
                  • The few Villanova fans I saw were all well-dressed, fit, middle-aged Italian/Jewish-looking men. Definitely winning on the cool factor
                  • Every time I turned around, Vegas was scheming to separate me from my money.
                  • Good showing by BYU fans, which wasn't a surprise.
                  • I'm loving Mboup. He's in line for my Jake Shoff (God rest his soul) "Mr. Intangible" award.
                  Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

It can get super loud during hockey games, so there might be something to that. Or maybe I am just blessed to be a part of fan bases that love to yell.

                    Mboup is a great addition.

Really fun atmosphere with 4 fanbases.

The only thing that drove me crazy was the giant subwoofer they used during every timeout.

                          • Monday was not a masterpiece of great team basketball. But when you have really good players you can get away with that.

I am with myboynoah about the lucky break factor and the weird offensive boards Nova kept getting. If that continues to be a trend it may force me to believe BYU doesn't hustle but like others I tend to expect the arc of this season's team to follow last year and I just think they don't yet play well as a total team. Case in point is how few assists we had. Given the higher talent level and ability to exploit one on one matchups, I don't expect BYU to have the high assist numbers they enjoyed the past two years ( or any time BYU has had a good basketball team), but I expect they will get better at that as the season progresses.

Did they commentators ever mention the status of Pickens wrt his injury and how much longer he will be out.

I do look forward to watching them in person and the excitement and publicity about Dybantsa even has my wife looking forward to heading down Saturday and having to endure the long drive home after the game.

YES! Went right into our insides. mrs. myboynoah wasn't happy with that.

Also, we had a fairly strong draft on us all night (until we relocated midway thru the second half). It was already cool in the arena and that draft was a killer. Maybe I'm just old and need to bring a sweater everyplace I go.
