BYU loses at home by 5 to Texas Tech. The first half TTU was quite horrible and we should have built a much bigger HT lead. The last 6+ minutes of the second half, TTU got hot and simply played like a good team. BYU wilted, and no, we don't have a go-to scorer. Even Jaxson Robinson was very hit or miss (actually he missed a ton of shots). I don't think we've had a go-to scorer since Childs and that Covid team. It was very telling that Catchings was not on the floor down the stretch. We had the calls going our way this game (KY definitely works the officials diferently than Pope/Rose did), but we will win very few conference games with as poor of a FT shooting team as we are. And I'll be the first to say that I don't want to be just a 3P shooting team, but holy hell, why can't we shoot well at home? At the risk of a knee jerk reaction, I'm about ready to chalk this season up to KY's first year, hope that we can beat Utah twice, and then I'm ready for next season.
Mag Mawot gets the Player of the Game award, for the second time. He played down the stretch over Catchings. GSc agreed he was our best player, and the also shot the ball the best (TS%), and had the best ORtg. An efficient 11 points and 0 TOs in 20 minutes. He was the one player that actually looked hungry out there. Keita had the best DRtg and his 10 rebounds in just 17 minutes is impressive. Too bad he can't create his own shot to save his life. I mean, neither could most of the rest of the team this game...
Dallin Hall gets the Struggled to Perform award, for just the first time this season. Hall has been very average this season. I was really expecting him to take a huge leap this season, but I think he's still struggling with his role playing alongside Demin. He can score and he can pass the ball, but he did neither of those very well this game. Both Hall and Knell were tied with the worst GSc. If Knell isn't hitting 3Ps, he just doesn't provide anything else. Catchings had the worst DRtg, probably why he only played 19 minutes, and almost none of the last 10 minutes. He actually shot the ball decently. He needs to be more aggressive with his 2P shots, and do it more often; he was 2/2 on 2P shots. Keita had the worst TS%, and ORtg. He had misses at the rim and missed both of his FTs. TTU did a very good job of the pick and roll with their bigs and getting them easy baskets. We did not. Against Houston, there were times that Demin was waving away the pick and roll...
BYU is now 10-4 (1-2) and #47 in Kenpom and #50 in NET. TTU is now #16 in Kenpom and #16 in NET. No shame in a Q1 loss, but we also missed an opportunity for a key Q1 win at home. Up next is at TCU, who is 8-6 (1-2) and #74 in Kenpom and #76 in NET. As an away game, this is still a borderline Q1 game.
