  • BYU finally wins a close one and beats Baylor by 4 in OT. Catchings had a game to remember, but yet still had to watch from the bench in OT. Very perplexing. I mean, I guess it preserved his perfect shooting night, but there was a closeup on him at the end of the game and he looked a little annoyed. Denim, I can kinda see not playing in OT because he has made some very bad shot selections late in games, but still. I thought this was a very oddly officiated games, with lots of bad calls going both ways. I know this is normal for any fanbase, especially those on the losing end, but reading the Baylor fans comments on the reddit game thread you'd think that 50 fouls were called on Baylor and just 5 on BYU. In reality it was 23 called on Baylor vs 19 on BYU and we only had 2 more FT attempts. And what's amazing is that we hit 80% of our FTs!

Obviously, Kanon Catchings got the Player of the Game award, for the second time this season. Perfect from the floor, shooting threes, mid-range jumpers, and dunking the ball, also perfect from the line. No surprise that he had the best PER, GSc, TS%, and ORtg. Keita had the best DRtg, although nobody really had that good of a defensive score, and I didn't think that any of our bigs played that well honestly.

Mawaot Mag gets the Struggled to Perform award, for the second game in a row, and third in the last five games. Time to insert Catchings back into the starting lineup? Every time he drives to the hoop it looks like he's about to slip and/or loose the ball without any pressure. He had the worst PER, GSc, TS%, and DRtg (and he's supposed to be a defensive specialist). He did hit a cricial 3 though. Keita gets the worst ORtg and sometimes I wonder why he even bothers posting up as no one ever even attempts to throw the ball to him. His dunk though!

BYU is now 14-6 (5-4) and #31 in Kenpom and was #38 in NET prior to today. Baylor is now #26 in Kenpom and was #28 in NET. This would currently be a Q1 win, but could slip to being a Q2 if they go below #30. Up next is UCF, who is 13-7 (4-5) and #59 in Kenpom and was #64. Since this is an away game, this is also a Q1 game.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Seemed like a no brainer to play him over Knell in those spots with the game he was having especially late in the game and during OT.
            Here is your answer.

I totally get it. We were getting killed by 2-3 players on the Baylor team down the stretch. We needed some defensive stops and Catchings while having an amazing offensive night, does not play good defense yet.

            • Excellent game and I was okay with not going with Kanon in OT, even though Hall's trap in the corner made me rethink the reason. And I'll admit to an apparently huge pop culture blindspot by admitting I had never heard of Conor McGregor.

lol I kept telling mrs. myboynoah, "oh, that's Colin McGregor." She was, who is that. I googled Colin McGregor and found out he's a fighter pilot and brother of Ewan McGregor.

Kanon's aunt was at the game. That was cool.

I have heard about him, but not much.

I own an Ireland shirt that my wife bought me and I like a lot, even if I haven't been there. I wore it to Costco on the wrong Saturday when there was a big fight. I got a lot of "Go Connor" type comments.

                  • Are we starting to believe? I had written off this team as an NIT team after the losses to Utah, TCU and Texas Tech but I have found myself checking out the NET and KenPom rankings after the last two games. I was watching the mighty Rockland Bulldogs take down Taylor's Crossing Public Charter School last night in balmy Idaho Falls and thus was unable to watch BYU but on paper this team really appears to be starting to figure it out. Good to see Kanon Catching be the hero.

To make the NCAA tournament I think this team needs to finish the season with 20 wins-including the Big 12 tournament. BYU is at 14 wins so that means finishing no worse than 5-6 over the final 11 games and then winning 1 in the conference tournament. They play 8 games in February-I think BYU can win 3-4 and go 3-5 or 4-4 in Feb. KSU at home is the most likely win and @ Arizona is the most likely loss. Beating Kansas again would be huge for the ol optics. With only 3 home games, and 2 of those versus AZ and Kansas, it is likely going to take a couple of road wins.

This is crunch time for post season opportunities. BYU crapped the bed vs TCU and Utah and it is time to take one or two we shouldn't win.

Yeah, those were both terrible losses.

We won that game with Richie having an off night. If Egor continues to improve, I like our odds.

What is up with Fouss lately? Seems to miss too many shots and his defense is questionable. Keita seems to be getting better, but he needs to stop committing dumb fouls.

I keep waiting for Fouss to be our Tysen Beckford and "Unbreak our Hearts" but alas I think he Is what he is.

I am all in on Demin and Catchings-Richie just keeps getting better. If KY can get BYU to the NCAA tourney I think it bodes well for him as a college hoops coach. It gives his model clout moving forward etc. Even if both Catchings and Demin jump for the NBA after this season.

I am a HUGE supporter of Conor's appearance at the BYU game and hope that he attends many more with more screentime. I also think that BYU money guys should get some other sports icons to attend, like Dennis Rodman or Michael Vick. Too bad that OJ Simpson and Aaron Hernandez are dead, though.

                            Well played.

I see that there were a few hundred fans at the Utah game last night. That's pretty cool.

My thinking is that Fouss was great against WCC competition but has had to adjust to XII competition which is bigger and better. He regularly now goes up against 7-footers.with his 6'6" frame. I still believe in him.

Heading into February, I feel like the biggest loss from last season was Noah Waterman and his height.
