      • Gotta agree with the announcers that Demin's shot was not what we wanted.

          • BYU loses by 4 to TCU, and has now lost 3 in a row. Hall didn't start. Catchings didn't start the second half and only played 9 minutes total. Demin, who can't hit anything besides a layup right now, decides to try a fadeaway 3P late in the game. First half we decide to not even try to defend the 3P. That 14-1 run was fun. The rest of the game was not.

Richie Saunders gets the Player of the Game, for just the second time this season. He was the best player of the court for either team. GSc agreed that no other BYU player came close to him. I also gave him the best TS% over Keita because he (Keita) only had 2 shot attempts. 87.4% TS% on 13 FGA is just amazing. Keita got the highest ORtg. I guess that calculation liked his 2/2 shooting, a lot. I'm not saying that Keita should be the #1 focus of our offense, but I feel like there has got to be a way to involve him more. Traore had the best DRtg. He didn't have any steals or blocks, so I guess there was just fewer points allowed per possession when he was on the court.

Trevin Knell gets the Struggled to Perform award, for the third time this season. 1/5 FGs and 2 TOs. He got the start over Catchings, but does he deserve it? I don't know who else to start. I feel like all starting positions need to go up for grabs each week. Knell had the worst PER, GSc, and DRtg. Baker had the worst TS% and ORtg. That would kinda rule him out as a starter...

The season average PER has been updated for the last two games this week. Top 3 is Demin/Saunders/Traore with Saunders and Traore trading places. Let's just roll with the top 5 PER players and see how they play together: Demin / Saunders / Traore / Keita / Knell.

BYU is now 10-5 (1-3) and #47 in Kenpom and was #47 in NET coming into the game. TCU is now #72 in Kenpom and was #74 in NET. This is a borderline Q1/Q2 loss. Up next is Oklahoma St, who is 9-5 (1-2) and #104 in Kenpom and #105 in NET. As a home game, this is a Q3 game. A must win or I really start to lose faith.

            • Disappointing game in a lot of ways. TCU is not particularly good and they were without their best player.

Demin, generally, did not do well initiating the offense. He had difficulty handling the ball and the double team at the top of the key seemed to cause him to back up every time instead of finding the open man. And that last shot was...ill-advised.

Baker seemed to turn the ball over every time he tried to drive. Also played some real bad defense.

              Knell was mostly ineffective.

Mag had a couple of nearly identical dunk opportunities that he fumbled away when he couldn't corral the passes.

Catchings had a nonsensical foul near the top of the key, as well as some turnovers.

Several missed free throw attempts (including from 90%+ Mag and 80%+ Traore), though didn't seem as bad as the prior game.

3-point defense was nonexistent in the first half.

Have to agree that the way this team is playing now is not worthy of the tournament.

              At least Saunders played well.

                        • Refs were paid by the whistle. Apparently.

                          Ugly win, but a win.

                          • BYU gets a badly needed win, beating Oklahoma St by 16. We built a huge first half lead, which should have been even bigger if not for our own TOs. OSU played absolutely horrible in the first half. I did like Ousmane's game and Keita just couldn't defend him. BYU let OK St get a 27 lead down to 3, but they pushed them back. The refs started out calling everything, then nothing, then everything again. The announcers were getting tired of the whistles too. I've mentioned this before, but I really noticed again how different KY is with the refs compared to past BYU coaches. He doesn't just sit there quietly fuming and then explode at them. He works them all game long, in a non-aggressive manner. At one point, he wanted to talk to a ref and instead of waiting for one to come, he kinda demanded the ref come to him. And what was up with Catchings? Even before the first T against him, I saw him twice in the first few minutes of the game, push an opponnent with both hands, in an off-the-ball situation. Both of those could have easily been called against him. He looked like he just didn't have his head or heart in the game. And what was Knell called a T for? But the real story of the game, was the resurgence of Demin's offensive game. Finally, in the second half, he saw some shots fall, and he also played with some defensive swagger. Anytime he plays like that, we have a chance to win.

Player of the Game goes to Trevin Knell, for the third time.4 3Ps, 5 rebounds, and 0 TOs makes for a very solid contribution. GSc agreed that he was our best player. Also, I really wish "charges drawn" were an official stat, because I sure would give him some bonus points for that too! Traore had the best DRtg and I think he did a better job against OSU's bigs than Keita did. Hall had the best TS% and ORtg. He had some silly TOs, but I loved his shooting.

Mawot Mag got the start, but he also got the Struggled to Perform award, for the first time. He does some good things, but he had the worst PER, GSc, TS%, and ORtg. I would have expected more than 2 rebounds from a senior high engergy defensive specialist. And yeah, he can't hold onto the ball, and has trouble not slipping while trying to dribble. He needs to be a Bruce Bowen, defensive specialist who can hit corner 3Ps. Hall had the worst DRtg. I didn't notice anything in particular, but maybe OSU's hot 3P shooting in the second half was partly due to him. Dunno.

BYU is now 11-5 (2-3) and is #45 in Kenpom and was #48 in NET prior to today. Oklahoma St is now #113 in Kenpom and was #114 in NET. This is a Q3 win, which while better than a Q4 win, still won't due much to help our tournament resume. Up next is Utah, who is 9-6 (1-3) and #80 in Kenpom and #74 in NET. As an away game, this is a borderline Q1/Q2 game.

                            • D news mentioned Chris Burgess being on both sides of rivalry. Did t mention what Reed said that may have cost him his job. Don’t know how much of it is true. Don’t know if Reed and Burgess have talked to each other since. Or how much Reed stays in touch with byu basketball. Coached against them at sun. I seen him coach snow against the college of southern Idaho too. Caring for is wife with dementia now. Burgess did t play for byu but now is coaching there.
