This would be really huge for BYU for next year, if this kid can perform as well as top 40 recruits perform on average.

What a weird recruiting year for BYU if they land this kid. 2 good college transfers-neither of whom may end up starting. Then a HS class of 4 (Kozlowski, Crawford, Demin & Catchings) all of whom are top 100/4 star recruits and only one is LDS. I guess Bahr is going on a mission and ought to be included in this year's haul. I guess there will also be another HS level international recruit by the time school starts in September. So when the dust settles 7 new players into the program with 1 LDS and 1 LDS kid goes directly onto a mission-so a total of 2/8 new players who are LDS.

        Very strange times indeed.

          • Until any of these prospects actually materialize at BYU, this feels a lot like the Utah Jazz post Stockton/Malone. For those who remember the era, there were lots of big name free agents flirting with the Jazz. They would either sign a max deal as a restricted FA which would then be matched by their current team, or they would use their negotiations wqith Utah as negotiating leverage to drive up their value for the other teams. Utah was the easy target because they had a lot of cap space and were desperate to replace Stockton and Malone's production. In actuality, none of these guys wanted to play in Utah. So we ended up signing guys like Raja Bell and Matt Harpring, and Memo Okur.

Re BYU: I find it hard to believe that any of these top recruits want to play in Provo and are willing to follow the honor code. Which then sets up a scenario where it's only a matter of time until someone gets booted for having sex. Consider this my approach to BYU fandom, but the fact that all of these top recruits are suddenly interested in BYU is going to turn out to be too good to be true.

                • One main difference between the rebuilding Jazz and the current Cougars: KY has something to offer that potential incoming talent want.

My initial thoughts are the same, so I guess I'm a Debby Downer pussy as well.

That said, O680 makes a good point about KY offerings something to incoming talent. KY has assembled a staff that is clearly together to prepare players to go to the NBA. It's like a small NBA-prep academy. And KY has been very vocal that his goal is to put players in the NBA. That means a lot of one-and-dones. So, all they need to do is stay eligible for 6-8 months. Also, we've already had non-LDS players for multiple years and they have somehow been able to stay eligible. Maybe BYU has reassessed its compliance and punishment processes since Brandon Davies.
                    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

That, and I assume their NIL deals include a forfeiture clause for Honor Code violations. Getting suspended from the team has always been a disincentive, but losing megabucks for a casual boink is a far greater deterrent.

Another good point that I hadn't considered.

                        • Also, as I reread my post, I want to make sure that it is not interpreted as any hate whatsoever towards Memo Okur. Loved that guy on the Jazz--probably one of my top 5 favorite Jazz men ever. But when he first signed with the Jazz, he was not a sexy signing by any stretch of the imagination. He was about 5 years ahead of his time as a stretch 5 who could defend. Would have loved to see him alongside Mitchell and Rudy.

                            Yes, they have.

                            • It would be the height of stupidity to invest millions to try and set up a pipeline program, offer big bucks and then boot a kid for having sex and cease paying him. I’d imagine you couldn’t do that even once and have this plan work. I’m guessing these guys will have the kind of leeway that the football team had in the early 80s. I mean how much longer will they even be expected to go to class?

You just explained why I think the NIL is potentially a bigger negative for BYU than for pretty much any other school. Because if that's how it plays out, I could see BYU ending sports as we know them within the next decade.
