    That's cool.

Wasn't Randy headed for med school at one point?

I just wanted to second hand name drop by saying that my wife went to HS and was (kind of) friends with Randy Reid. She thought he was too cocky.

I didn't hate either Randy or Robbie as a player, but I will be disappointed if Haws isn't better than both of them.

Robbie was a much much better player than Randy. If either deserved to play as freshman it was Robbie.

Reid could not recruit. The fact of the matter was that his lack of interpesonal skills ruined him. The writing was on the wall and BYU canned him. I think BYU should have let him try to coach his way out of the shithole he had coached BYU into, but I think the outcome had been determined. Despite his spectacular ability to coach the game, it requires far better athletes than he could recruit from about 1994 on.

I think many folks claim his nepotism was the reason he could not recruit. That is horseshit as his sons were both much better than the average BYU guard. They were solid players, both of them and any coach at BYU would have used those two as much as Roger did.

I don't think Reid would have survived if Giacolletti was at the U. His lack of interpersonal skills wore thin on most and folks were just looking for a reason to sack him and his lack of recruiting would inevitably lead to shitty seasons and he would have been fired. I still think the way BYU did it was rank, unfair and lacked tact as well as class, but the endstate was inevitable.

The problem with Reid was his recruiting. As we all know his X's and O's were great. His teams got progressively worse over the years because the talent level got lower and lower. He seemed to pride himself on taking a team of nobodies and making them a 20 win team. Many of his players hated him and transferred away. By the time he was fired, we didn't have a single D1 quality guy on the team, with nothing in the missionary pipeline. But I believe he has a winning record head to head against Majerus, 7-6 or something like that.

I agree with this. I played the same year as Robbie (tooting my own horn here: we were both first-team all Region and played together in a post-season Utah All-Star game) and Robbie was without a doubt good enough to play for BYU. Randy was good enough, as well.

Roger always had such a chip on his shoulder about his sons, though. I went to BYU basketball camp every year from about 6th to 11th grade. Almost every year, Roger would start talking in front of hundreds of campers about how Dean Smith had sat in his living room trying to recruit Randy and how stupid people in Utah County were for thinking Randy wasn't good enough to play for BYU. He would go on this rant for about 20 minutes. The kids in the camp would look around at each other thinking, "Who cares? When is he gonna shut up so we can shoot some hoops."

Roger lacked the emotional intelligence even to understand how ridiculous it was to brag about his sons in front of a bunch of mostly elementary school and junior high school kids. His interpersonal skills were terrible and that eventually took a toll on recruiting and on his support within the athletic department and within the university as a whole.

I don't think that's quite correct. As I recall, Robbie turned 19 right after HS graduation (I believe in June of 1993), so I believe he just "kindergarten redshirted" one season.

Talk about a downfall...I don't think UM has been to the tourney in a decade and, IIRC, they have had to forfeit almost all of their seasons from the '90s.

As a close personal friend of Robbie I can confirm that this is true.

Please confirm that he was a douche and wore sunglasses in the MTC hallways.

Robbie played the 94 -95 basketball season. He hit a monster 3 in the Huntsman center that year. Also he and Alex Jensen were in the MTC the same time I was. Moreover, the article for SI was the swimsuit issue for February of 1995

I cannot confirm that as I did not attend the MTC. It seems like he would do that. The poor guy ate nothing but shit sandwiches his whole growing up years because everyone hated him because of who he was. I would not blame him for wanting to be incognito or in the alternative trying to be cool (however one interprets those actions).

I think you mean the 1995 Swimsuit Issue.

My favorite fan sign on the road that season was a picture of Randy and Robbie's heads with "The two biggest boobs in the swimsuit issue." That one cracked me up. I wish I could find a picture of that.

I knew I liked him when I read about him getting kicked out of a game for fighting a fan who was mocking his pops and of course leaving a game against one of the St George schools givin' them double bird action.

The kid was a feisty SOB and it was unfortunate how it all ended for the Reid's and BYU. In a better world it would Poke or Ute fans complaining about Reid giving the double bird like they do Jason Buck.
