As stated above, I'm definitely a cynic. I'm sorry to harsh her mellow, but it is just truth at this point. I'm not even being a cynic on this one, I'm being a realist.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostStop harshing my mellow, you friggin' pessimists.
Look no further than Romney's ratings to see what Utah wants from its senators. Lee is exactly what the majority of people in Utah want. He is Utah's senator as long as he wants the job.As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

You are a hopeless cynic and AJ never resists taking a jab at Utah. That is his schtick. And I am being a realist about that.Originally posted by MartyFunkhouser View Post

Having a quasi-republican in the race as an independent and not having a democratic candidate makes this unique. And the demographics of utah are changing.
While Lee does well with Republican and conservative voters, only 39% of Utahns overall approve of his job performance in the Senate, while 41% disapprove, according to a Deseret News/Hinckley Institute poll 808 registered Utah voters conducted May 7-13. Those numbers could make him vulnerable in a general election."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Hey, I love Utah; but politically it is as weird as Uncle Ted. I remember Bo Gritz getting buzz in the 92 presidential race! Keep dreaming about a non-R winning a statewide election. If Utahns could overwhelmingly vote for Trump in 2020, they will definitely vote for Mike Lee.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

I was home in Utah over Christmas and I drove thru SLC (the aves, east bench, 9th&9th) and you'd think Becky Edwards is a shoe-in! She has a lawn sign in every yard. But southern Utah/Utah county will go 75% for Lee; neither Becky nor E. McMuffin has a chance.
And I think Mitt might be in trouble too.

I hope and pray that the Mike Lee campaign dismisses hard data as blithely as you do.Originally posted by Applejack View Post

Remember the hard data that McMullin had a chance of winning Utah in 2016. Remember the McMullin is gay and has a gay parent robocalls? Remember McMullin getting 21.54% of the vote?Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

I don't recall any polls at that time showing the race as close as this.Originally posted by MartyFunkhouser View Post

Do you guys really see these comments as some kind of political acumen? Of course it is tough to unseat an incumbent. Good grief. Nobody is predicting Lee is going to lose. We are just excited for the possibility and the fact that there is some reason for hope."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? I don't think the hard data that you speak of (the share of people that approve of Lee's job performance?) means what you think it means. Political partisanship is a heavy burden to overcome. Yes, McMullin is running as an (I) not a (D) which would be the kiss of death in Utah. But is it enough to shift the heavy lean towards Republicans that exists throughout the state? I say no way. I would LOVE to be wrong on this one.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

When are Utahns going to wake up and realize the Republican Party has become something different than what they think it is?

There's more to what's going on in politics than meets the eye. Turns out all our problems are class-based.
Except for a Catholic (with Mormon) strain of educated elite crackpots, the alt-right is pretty much lower class whites who have seen good working class jobs disappear.
Whites on the radical left are educated elites and the poor are on the radical right.
Bernie Sanders correctly identified the crux of what ails us, though he's personally deficient and his solutions are questionable.
Our homeless mess is also a manifestation of this problem.
Some here are emblematic of the problem as they see it. Rich white elite in a big city who sends his kids off to become management consultants who rig the system to take all the money, and couldn't care less about the working class's economic catastrophe and dying off prematurely from opioids, drink and despair. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

It is a crazy time. I am saddened and disgusted by the Republican party right now, but at the same time I am increasingly repulsed by the democrats with identity politics, defund the police, woke nonsense, fiscal failures, etc. Talk about a massively bungled opportunity."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right?
