2020 General Presidential Election Thread

I'd like to take a moment and thank this board and group of people.

In 2009 when I joined CUF - I would have been a Trumper centerfold. Although I quit listening to Rush circa 2002 - I was still a eff-them dems and their commie liberal ways. Through my years of participation - I've come to realize the bigger picture and see the Good Ole Boys Republican's for what they are. Many of my old friends (ward members) are still spouting stupid crap and are blind to the central theme of love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In our ward there have been changes. This past month both the EQP and the RSP have been released for preaching anti-BLM propoganda over church zoom - and a huge argument in Ward Council where the young Bishop (31) went toe to toe with the 60 year old EQP over BLM and won. EQP was actively telling ward members that BLM is a tool of Satan to break up families.

Any way - Thanks guys - I'm better for my participation here. I hope in ten more years I can grow even more. Be patient with me.

That'd be great. Take away those people and the Fox & Friends crowd and Fox becomes a reasonable conservative alternative to MSNBC and CNN.

I don’t know if Fox really wants to be a real news organization. They are making money hand over fist the way they are, why change? There are plenty of blowhard right wing no talent former politicians that would line up to take Tucker Carlson’s place (I’m looking at you Jason Chavetz).

i'm glad you're enjoying it. trumpism is a rejection of any coherent ideology and the written and unwritten boundaries and norms that have historically been required to facilitate the function of government. it's a rejection of any commitment to truth, intellectual rigor, patience, tradition, and any other value that isn't abject short term selfishness or worse. it's about sticking it to the libs at all costs. it's a patent embrace of hypocrisy--of decrying the evils of socialism while giving $25b in subsidies to farmers for commodities that could be purchased cheaper globally, of staking your reputation on your support for troops while insulting gold star families and former prisoners of war, of obsessing over the bill of rights but attacking the speech rights of private enterprises and citizens and permitting new infringements of the second amendment.

you don't have to be an ignorant, undisciplined, arrogant, entitled, loudmouthed piece of shit like trump to embrace the above. in fact, the quiet and calculating adherents to the above are much more threatening.

i guess the best response is: can you give me a coherent policy statement of the republican party over the last decade? trump conservatism is some kind of bizarro mirror image.

I'll second this. I've been enriched through the discourse of ideas here both politically as well as how I view doctrine v culture in the Church. Many bright people here, including those many who have left us.

He's done. But his influence isn't. Right now the most visible GOP candidates for 2024 are Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz, but solid populists. They haven't muttered a single word against Trump, because they know those voters will need to be feted in 2024. Lindsey Graham is still playing cute with the fringe. I would love for there to be a reckoning that would right the ship for the GOP. But that's not happening for a while. It is wishful thinking that Trumpism will be gone when he is out of the White House.

I agree. The Murdochs are classic yellow journalists, all in it for the buck. Someone should make a movie about a newsman who gets so rich and powerful that he forgets his idealistic youth and alienates all of the people he ever loved along the way. Now that would be a great movie!
