1912, you had interesting shit go down in the POTUS elections. TDR ran on the Progressive Party (Bull Moose) ticket, and had a strong showing. Debbs, who was a genuine socialist, ran did pretty well as a 4th party candidate. Also interesting, Debbs and other socialists campaigned in Utah and rented out church building to hold rallies etc. There's been instances where socialists spoke from the tabernacle, I can specifically of Irish leader, James Connolly, a Wobbly and Irish revolutionary did for sure.

I think the 2 parties got really aggressive on protecting access to elections after that. There were various state parties that were independent and powerful that got swallowed up. Like Minnesota has a long name for their democratic party, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. That's is because in the 30s or 40s the democrats joined, or more accurately swallowed up the Farmers Labor party, which was more radical. There are like 1 or 2 other states that have situations like that, but I don't remember who.

Recently you have had 3rd parties used in sneaky ways. Republican activists have snuck on to Green Party Ballots to syphon votes away from Democrats. Fascists like Augustus Sol, have been trying to coopt Libertarian politics, and have had some success. They often face resistance when outed, but that hasn't consistently been the case.

I think the Know Nothings were around when Lincoln was. That's probably the creepiest political party we've that actually had some success.

Trump’s “Total Authority” Claim Has Rep. Justin Amash “Looking Closely” at Third-Party Run

                    https://slate.com/news-and-politics/...party-run.html

"Of all the potential damage done by President Donald Trump’s meltdown during Monday evening’s briefing on the coronavirus, the biggest self-inflicted political wound may just be its impact on Michigan Rep. Justin Amash. The libertarian-inclined Amash was already a vocal Trump critic, so much so that last year he left the Republican Party over its fealty to the president and voted in favor of impeachment. The 39-year-old representing Grand Rapids has previously hinted at the idea of running a third-party campaign for president this fall, but speculation was boosted Monday when Amash took to Twitter to express his opposition to the president’s performance, particularly Trump’s assertion that he had “total authority” as president to reopen the American economy on whatever timetable he wished."

C'mon Ruth Marcus, you can't have it both ways.

She should have just led with this:

And it’s important to acknowledge: We all suffer from the inclination, whether knowing or unknowing, to assess evidence through the lens of preexisting biases.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

So she could lose a Senate seat election twice within a two-year period? Impressive.
