Yeah, I know the story. But constitutionally, how would you limit things to two parties? Especially when we have history of a viable new party evolving?

Also, I have no problem voting third party. In rare elections, it gives one a chance to participate in the voting process while still maintaining a measure of self-respect.

When was the last party that started and elected a national office? I guess the Green got a senator or rep in the 90s. I would not say that in the last 150 years new parties have been a part of our election process.

I also see no problem voting 3rd party, I think it would be a huge benefit to us as a country and make it so we don’t have Trump/Biden, Trump/Clinton, Obama/McCain, Bush/Gore elections with neither option being worthwhile of consideration. But to say third parties are our history seems about as connected to what we call democracy now as polygamy to Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saintism.

The more parties the better. Parliamentary democracy all the way.

the electoral college basically already does that.

One vote out of thousands, or even millions depending on your state isn't going to decide the election. Then on top of that, most Americans live in a state where it's easy to guess who will get the electoral votes anyway. If the major party choices all make me want to vomit, then there is nothing wasted by voting for someone else. What would feel like a waste to me in that situation would be to vote for someone I can't stand.

If a really strong third party conservative entered the race, it would split Republican votes and throw the election to the Democrats. If a really strong third party Liberal entered the race, it would do the opposite and Trump would win in landslide. Would either of these events inform the two main parties what they need to do to become stronger? No. It would be just a random, unfortunate event for that party. It could happen any election. If we changed how we do elections and a have a run off for all parties to narrow it down to two and then have the final election, that would be a good way to incorporate multiple parties. I'm not educated on foreign politics, I guess this happens in some countries. But how we do things now, third party candidate is destructive to the process, imho.

The Constitution already provides for this. The runoff happens in the House of Reps if no one gets a majority of EC votes. But I'd be willing to listen to arguments for amending it.

Seems like you're intentionally missing the point I'm making. But, this is like second to last on all the things I care about right now. So I won't belabor the point.

For the record, I think philosophically that your idea has merit. It would just take amending out the EC which would seem to be politically impossible right now.

Sounds like you favor ranked choice voting.

Out of curiosity, what is the one thing you care about less?
