Within the first minute after the larger temblors, our daughter in SLC has guessed the magnitude within a tenth of the subsequently reported number. Her Utah-native husband and four-year-old son thinks she's a seismology goddess. Comes with years of Bay Area experience...

Didn't even feel that one. I was in my car I guess.

Just luck. Without knowing your distance to the epicenter and depth to focus, there is no basis for an estimate.

I disagree. I was pretty close as well. I lived in the Bay Area when I was younger as well.

Omaha is right. The amplitude of shaking is highly dependent on distance from epicenter, the soils beneath you, the type of building, and the shape of the basin. Don't kid yourself.

Understood, it's mostly luck, but whenever we get a quake here, we make a guess and base it on the assumption we're within 20 or so miles of the epicenter. We're usually pretty close--not within a tenth but almost always within a full point. But then, since the scale is logarithmic, and a full point represents a huge difference, we're not claiming any unique skill here.

I think what your daughter did was awesome.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

                      Cool:

"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

The google says shockwaves move 8 miles per second.

During a quake in the late '80s (pre-Loma Prieta) I was in my Palo Alto office talking to a woman in MoFo's San Francisco tower office. A quake (that I learned later was epicentered to the south) started rocking my building and I immediately said, "Oooh, earthquake!" She responded, "I don't feel a thing," and then right after started screaming as the wave moved north into the city. So your post checks out...

My wife and I were both surprised at how loud it was.
