South Korea shows that democracies can succeed against the coronavirus

Some of South Korea’s measures have been controversial. For example, people who are confirmed to have coronavirus are tracked by GPS, and a live map of their locations (without their names) is available for anyone wishing to avoid them. That may seem invasive, but it sure sounds better than having surveillance drones take people’s temperature and spray disinfectant everywhere, as officials are doing in several parts of China.

This is true, you can see where the infected person visited while sick. Also, the government pushes out alarms when someone in your burough tests positive.

Wow, Merkel warning that more that two-thirds of the German population could get the COVID-19. Probably overblown, but let's do that math.

Two-thirds of 83 million is 55.3 million. If we use the most conservative mortality rate we've seen, that being 0.067 percent in Korea, that would be over 370,000 deaths in Germany alone. It's over 1 million using a 2 percent mortality and almost 2 million using WHO's 3.4 percent mortality rate.

Or we’re going to find out that this is far more widespread that initially believed and the mortality rate is exponentially lower than initially believed. But I’m just a non crazy person staying calm while some of the usually-more-rational people on the board seem to be losing their minds. :throat clear:

I got a delta one upgrade three days in advance for my trip this week. Those are usually a <10% hit rate for me on the SLC/JFK route and only clear right before I board. Hotel rates in Manhattan are tanking. It appears travel is already grinding to a halt.

Selfishly I really, really hope they don't start cancelling/postponing high school track meets. LAUSD is preparing for closures. If that happens districts all over SoCal will close and all school sanctioned events are also suspended...

has not happened yet...but USC and UCSB are transitioning to online courses to finish the winter and spring quarters and LA Unified has requested the state for emergency resources to provide students that don't have home internet access...it sure seems imminent today.

I know Brian Monahan's wife very well. Just had dinner with her last week, in fact. When I asked her what Brian's thoughts were on the corona, she said he was very much in the middle of the road. When I asked her what that meant, she said he isn't super panicked about it but that he did urge that caution was warranted.

This is going to be a real and expanding problem. It's not the majority of people getting sick enough to need medical attention. It will be the exposure level to the elderly and infirm. This is what will potentially overwhelm hospital systems:
