My wife heard through the grapevine (no, not THAT grapevine, sickos!) that gas prices in Idaho Falls hit $4.75 in anticipation of the high demand I checked gasbuddy and gas prices in IF are around $2.66 , cheaper than prices in Boise currently.

We'll be picking the kids up from school tomorrow and driving up the middle of Nevada across the alien highway, staying Friday night in Twin Falls, then driving to Boise on Saturday morning to stay with friends. We're kind of winging the rest of the weekend. We've been looking at settling on Weiser, Idaho. Birth place of Hans Olsen. Several ways in with decent roads. I've been emailing people in town offering reserved parking spots and had the following interaction:

"Do you still have availability for reserving a parking spot for the eclipse?"

          "Yes for what day?"

"I believe the eclipse is on Monday."

"Yes it is. Is that the day you want?"

Apparently spending $30 to park in someone's field is a common enough occurrence that such details can't be taken for granted.

Anyway, should be an adventure. Saw a video clip from yesterday with traffic already backed up miles trying to get into some small Central Oregon town.

I drive that stretch of the highway often. The video was taken a couple of days ago. It's crazy. The onslaught has begun. A few gas stations have reported they are out of gas. And I've seen price increases of 20-30 cents a gallon here.

The smoke is going to drift into Idaho, making LS and DS shake their fists at the sky. I just hope Dwight can get his $30 back.

I read somewhere recently - trying to remember where - that someone who is from Boise was told from the Highway Patrol to expect the drive from Boise to Weiser to be a 10.5 hour drive. Seriously?

Last week was about the haziest I've ever seen it here from some large brush fires in Oregon or Nevada. My throat hurt all week and the haze was so thick a couple of days that the sun was not visible. Luckily it cleared up and hopefully it stays that way.

Keep in mind that Idaho Falls has gas rated at 85 octane available for sale while the Boise area doesn't go lower than 87. Make sure you're comparing apples to apples octane to octane.

I was told by a park ranger stationed near Weiser that they are expecting 6 hours to get from Payette to Weiser (14.5 miles per Google Maps).
