You guys should have listened to the tirade Mrs. NWC gave this am concerning those who don't give a crap. The eclipse is a HUGE affair. If you can't see how it throws into sharp relief man's insignificant place in this universe, then she would rather not associate with you on social media.

I'm really hoping it's as awesome as she hopes it will be. I don't want to deal with the let down.

Sorry. I am going to be fishing in Alaska.

Waaaaaaay outside of the path of totality, bro. So sad you don't get it.

I agree it's pretty lame. I saw one when in Nicaragua 2005. It was somewhere 80-90%, and very underwhelming. Maybe if it was 100% and lasted for a few minutes, that might be pretty cool.

But it's significant enough that our branch president out here made an announcement in church highly encouraging us to see it, because it's a "once in a lifetime event". So I think I better not pass it up.

I have no first-hand experience, but from all I have read, there is a pretty huge difference between even a 99% eclipse and a full one. Having said that, if I had to travel 300 miles and pay $500 for a crappy hotel room, I would likely skip it. But my house is in the 99% zone, my sister's is an hour away and will get a full eclipse for around 2 minutes, so we are going to head over and spend the night with her and watch it.

I'm irrationally interested in experiencing the zone of totality, but's the minimum drive for us is about 11 hours to somewhere in South Carolina. So we'll probably have to skip it and hope we are closer to the path of the next one in 2024.

Yeah, the one in '84 had something called like Bailey's Beads or something along those lines. This is the one I saw, the May 30, 1984 one. That red line went right over the top of my house. Wikipedia says it was "Annular" so it wasn't total.

Our house is at 99.5% eclipse. We're heading north 28 miles to get about a minute of total eclipse. Typically, that would take about 40 minutes. Not sure how long it will take the morning of the 21st. We're planning to leave pretty early.

One of the radio stations had some Dan Jones Poll data on the other day - and they were saying 18% of Utahans were planning to go to Idaho for the eclipse.

18%. Are you freaking kidding me?!?

                    Crap.

That's insane. I'm guessing the vast majority of the Utahans will be heading straight north to Eastern Idaho. It's a much closer drive to the path of totality than heading West on I-84. Maybe all the peoples' fears of stores and gas stations running out of product and the power, cell phone, and credit card systems failing aren't so unfounded. (I've been told to have enough cash, food, and water in the car to last a few days just in case.)

I'm heading to eastern Idaho but I'm going to go the route that completely avoids I-15 (With a stop at Craters of the Moon! ). Once there, my mom wants us all to trek somewhere in the mountains for a really cool view but I think rationality will prevail and we'll watch from my parents' front yard.

It would be sort of amusing if there was a huge storm that covered a big portion of the path of totality that day.
                        PLesa excuse the tpyos.

As long as it's not over Idaho Falls, I agree. Anywhere in the path that is hit with cloudy weather is going to experience anarchy as all the locals and visitors scramble to find the nearest patch of clear sky. I'd rather not be a part of that.

I was thinking how cool it would be if a hurricane landed in Charleston, SC at the same time as the eclipse. I don't think they're quite wicked enough yet for that to happen.
