I think we tend to forget that we're not just "like" sheep, part of our brain is the same as sheep. We are in part sheep. If someone feels invoked to "hate" or at minimum feel "disgust", whatever is triggering that is reaching right past your cerebral cortex (where all the inhibition is) into your sheep (reptilian) brain. Societies have been practicing propaganda for a long time, we are very, very good at it.

That's the reason I previously tried to invoke the tribal nature of the interaction. Jonathan Haidt's The Righteous Mind should be required reading when discussing these things. It provides a much better tool set for interpreting the exchange. The boys and their chaperones came to the capital to participate in a tribal religious ceremony. So did the participants of the Indigenous Peoples March. So did the Black Hebrew Israelites. Generally, Americans are still civil enough to draw lines and just have the tribes just chant at one another. It's a game, who can get one of the other tribes to physically engage the other first, so they can claim victimhood first.

From that viewpoint, the Native elder crossed the line first. He physically moved into the space currently occupied by another tribe. From his post-incident narrative, I (with many) others believe that was his true purpose, he wanted to be seen being repressed by invoking the boys' tribal instincts. He partially succeeded.

The incident reflects most poorly not on the children, but on their adult chaperones. Much of the initial reaction to the children’s behavior—calls for doxing, violence, or permanent shunning—was indeed over the top. The school closed Tuesday for security reasons; officials said the institution was receiving death threats. That is an absurd overreaction.

No children deserve to be thrown away like refuse because they make a mistake, even a cruel one. Part of being a child is not understanding how your actions affect others, and part of growing up is learning to understand that.

I still find it just weird that (some) people are talking about what these boys did wrong. While completely ignoring what the groups of adults did.

The worst I've heard them come up with for the boys was that some of them may have chanted "build the wall". Yet no one cares that the Black Hebrew Israelis are calling them racist inbred crackers - and I don't know what else because in the videos it gets beeped out.

People are upset that the boys stood there and/or jumped or danced to the music played on the drum - but no one cares that the only reason that happened is because the "Elder" grabbed his drum and walked into their group.

Why are the kids being held to a higher standard than the adults - who should know better and should be setting the example (if we're honestly and truly worried about exhibiting appropriate behavior, that is.)

I agree with you philosophically. But practically, this would have never been a story had chaperones defused the situation by corralling those kids and demanding respectful behavior. If I was a parent of one of these kids, I would be livid that the group was allowed to remain in a situation that promoted kids to do stupid kid stuff. Which behavior, justly or unjustly, has now been memorialized forever by our stupid social media world.
