I'm not sure he's wrong. At least in the sense that you may be able to teach individual sneetches, but as a group the sneetches apparently will always be sneetches.

              • Our school district rolled out a "No Place for Hate" week this week. Our high schooler came home with an assignment to keep a "slur journal" in which she is supposed to write every insensitive slur she hears on TV/social media over the next week.

Wouldn't she be making a place for hate in the journal?

when i was in high school i had an eccentric teacher - his name was jc smith - who taught a class called social awareness or something along those lines. it was a class that only he taught and, iirc, he had to get i approval from the district or something to create the class. i'll never forget one of the assignments was for us to write down all the ethnic slurs we could think of and he'd give a prize for first, second and third place in terms of who could name the most. as a racist teenage from lily white utah, it was one of the most enjoyable assignments i was ever given. i took second place.

pretty sure that dude ended up being fired at the end of that year or not long after.

I don't like the name of the assignment, but I think it's a good one. It could be pretty sobering to try and keep track of all the those kind of things that are part of someone's media diet.

Anne Applebaum won the Pulitzer for writing about Gulags. The article is worthwhile because it comes from her.
