My conspiracy theory part of my brain thinks that the Ukraine war is just a way to disarm the West so that China has fewer impediments to a takeover of Taiwan. The counter to that is that I'm not sure the US would risk WW3 to protect Taiwan.

I think it is likely and reasonable that China wants to exhaust Western military resources. Similar motivation for the West vis-a-vis Russia in Ukraine. I am not so sure China plans to takeover Taiwan in the short-term future. My guess is they are more convinced the US is waning as a power and if they play the long game they can get Taiwan back without paying a great price in the future. Even if US power doesn't wane it is likely that as time marches on its people will be less and less willing to fight for Taiwan. I tend to believe China believes a time will come where they can get it without a fight.

He's been consistently talking along these lines, pressing for the need to innovate and get prepared for war. The biggest threat right now (I mean besides those pesky narco terrorists) is China. Will they make a move on Taiwan? When they do, will they preemptively strike US forces in the region?

Then you have Russia trying to expand their footprint.

Are we going to be in another global conflict like WWII very soon? Possibly.

I haven't heard anything about Venezuela. But I'm kind of in my own little corner now, and pretty isolated from all the intel that flows through the unit briefings. I used to belong to units with real world missions. Now I manage a military sporting goods store equivalent.

And as close as I am to retirement, I ask a lot less questions along those lines. When people walk through my door, I'm much more interested in what they've been up to since I last saw them.
