The TikTok shop and Alibaba (basically, Chinese knockoffs of various things) are certainly going to stop shipping to the US over the de minimis exemption being ended and a $25/item duty imposed. A $10 tool with a $25 duty won't make sense, so folks will just buy from retail stores stores that will jack up the prices anyway. It's confounding how Trump's defenders accept his declarations about how everyone is ripping us off and these tariffs are intended to level the playing field. That's simply untrue--sure, there are specific examples of unfairness but overall the global economy has favored, not hurt, the U.S. But as I've ranted many times before, Trump has gone through life believing the "other guy" is ripping him off, whether it's regulatory agencies, the legal system, his vendors, opponents, competitors, or the others in his golf foursome (this is well-documented), and it helps justify in his amoral mind his corner-cutting, cheating, and demonstrably lousy business decisions. I long for the day when he joins his mentor, Roy Cohn, in whatever post-mortal hell awaits him.Comment
