The US is far from perfect and there have awful things done in terms of military interventions and wars, but one has to be daft to think our absence from global security issues would make the world or our country safer.Last edited by frank ryan; 10-08-2019, 03:02 PM.

Is Trump removing troops from Syria? Or just moving them around in Syria?Originally posted by Walter Sobchak View PostWe should mos def stay in Syria indefinitely... just like Iraq.
If Trump was looking at bringing troops home, I might listen to the arguments. But from what I understand, he's just moving them from one area of Syria to another. Leaving the folks who have been fighting ISIS with us unprotected seems like a dick move.

The pullback only concerns “two very small detachments” — meaning less than 25 people in total — that have been moved a “very short distance,” the official says.

We cannot bring troops home because that would not be in {insert any country not named America here}'s best interest... instead it would be playing right into the hands of {insert one of Russia, Iran, or North Korea}.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View Post

That ignores the reality of what is happening. Even though the total number of troops is small, their presence prevents the Turks from running roughshod over the Kurds. Erdogan tells Trump he wants to invade and Trump agrees to move our personnel to avoid conflict and entanglements. Erdogan specifically plans to attack the Kurds, and told Trump this (When Turkey talks about clearing terrorists away from its border, they mean ISIS AND the Kurds). It is a complete abrogation of our commitment to the Kurds, (again) and totally undermines our credibility in general and certainly as long as Trump is in the WH. I am in favor of getting out of Syria and other places. But doing it like this, on the back of a late Sunday night tweet after Erdogan rolled Trumpo in a phone call, is egregiously wrong regardless of how you feel about military adventurism.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostDrumpf is moving 25 people a very short distance....

Wrong argument. Trump isnt bringing anyone home. He is just getting out of the way so the Turks can kill Kurds. I fully agree we should stop intervening and engaging as much as we have in the past (we cannot afford it, if for no other reason) but having engaged, we have to make sure our disengagement makes sense and doesn't undermine our interests in a very palpable way. How likely is it the Kurds would help against ISIS or others now?Originally posted by Walter Sobchak View PostWe cannot bring troops home because that would not be in {insert any country not named America here}'s best interest... instead it would be playing right into the hands of {insert one of Russia, Iran, or North Korea}.

Can you cite the Congressional authorized "commitment" of which you speak? Maybe it is a test... If the Turks start running roughshod then he will carpet bomb them and the Dems will start calling the GOP'ers the warmongers again.Originally posted by creekster View PostThat ignores the reality of what is happening. It was the Obama Congress that authorized this commitment for a month... That is irrelevant. He is not bringing anyone home. Moreover, there is a question as to whether this particular use of military personnel does, in fact, fall under the War Powers act because they were there only in the nature of advisors (although I realize the weakness of that argument). That said, the reality is that we were there, we were working with the Kurds, who have suffered over 10k in casualties fighting ISIS for themselves but also at our behest, and then, when the Turks want to roll into town to clear them out we step back and let it happen. It would be one thing it this was Turkey in the west-friendly days of Attaturk, but this is an action by one of the worst dictators in the world.Originally posted by Walter Sobchak View PostCan you cite the Congressional authorized "commitment" of which you speak? We should have just have sent the drones in... They could have got the job done with about half the casualties.Originally posted by creekster View PostThat is irrelevant.
