Calling it a national emergency is a bit of a stretch, but anyone who doesn't think our immigration system is in crisis and in need of some serious help hasn't been paying attention. Unfortunately we haven't had a congress and president with the will to take it on at the same time. They seem to take turns saying it needs to be addressed when they are in the minority and then conveniently forget all about it once they gain a majority and can actually doing anything about it. Politicians suck. All of them do.

In all honesty - "crisis" might be strong. But I don't think so. The US immigration system has a pile of problems - which have been around for years and have never been addressed. And because they've never been addressed, it feels like the problems are just getting deeper and deeper and will become more difficult to address over time. So I guess to me this is kind of like the leaky faucet type of crisis. That it doesn't seem like a big deal if you're just looking at how much water is running. But when you notice that it's overflowing and seeping into the floorboards and slowly building up in the basement - then it goes from the small issue of a leaky faucet to the cumulative issue of that leaky faucet having been that way for way too long.

Oh yeah - my issues with the US immigration system have nothing to do with a wall. I mean - I don't know if more wall is needed or not, or how badly. I'm not dumb enough to think that all of the current walls should be torn down (sorry Beto!), and I don't know enough to know if there is need for some walls to be extended or not. So I'm just stayed out of the wall debate - because I don't know the answers and the people doing most of the talking (media and politicians) are way too emotionally invested to give an honest objective report anyway.

I'm speaking mostly about immigration. And that's why I specifically mentioned the immigration system, not border security, as the issue.

Quite frankly - I think if you fix many of the issues revolving around immigration, there may even be less need of a wall.

My sense is that the greatest immigration-related fear of Trump, Coulter, Steve Miller, and others of that ilk is that too many people are getting in, and that America is looking less and less like the country they grew up in (True! Why does this matter?). They devote most or all of their rhetoric to what must be done to keep people out. That list supports my belief (certainty, really) that we need to do more to get people here. The vast majority of people trying to get into the U.S. tend to be very hard-working, intelligent, and willing to make sometimes great sacrifices to get here. Potential drones on our society lack the motivation or skill to get here.

Our economy and, I think, national well-being depends on a steady infusion of new talent. Indeed, with our national birth rate at substantially below replacement levels, we'll eventually be in serious economic trouble if we don't increase immigration.

There are valid counterpoints to every policy and value the nation is debating now, including immigration. It is to the GOP's everlasting shame that they are migrating towards Trump's reverse midas touch. Every politically conservative view, no matter how valid, is corrupted and debased by his rhetoric. He cannot convince independent voters, much less democratic ones, of the virtue of any conservative viewpoint. Mainly because he really cannot talk coherently, but also because he's a demagogue at heart.

Is there a crisis with immigration? Iran? Trade? Abortion? If so, Trump is utterly unable to convince people outside of his base. He certainly won't have the independent vote this time around now that Hillary isn't running. And he may have damaged the brand for quite some time. How long is it going to be before a conservative candidate can convince the younger voters of any right of center issue?

There is only one economic system (call it democratic capitalism) that is focused on, and thus achieves, significant wealth-creation. Socialism, communism, fascism and ___________isms focus on wealth-redistribution. Because of that well-intended--but ultimately misguided--focus, none in the latter category has demonstrated its ability to endure long-term.
