Good afternoon. I don't post much here but want to get some advice from what seems like a rational and lively bunch of cougar fans.

Posting under this thread because I think the situation is a weird output from our current political environment:

I run supply chain for a pretty well known local consumer packaged goods company. We have used the services of a consultant who has relevant industry experience. From a technical standpoint, he's an 11 out of 10; super bright, competent and thorough. He has saved us $6-8M in costs annualized.

From a personal standpoint, he's an ass. Very combative, won't stay out of corporate politics, etc.

He's also a blatant racist and won't keep his opinions to himself. Some examples:
"You know, Germany gets criticized a lot, but they did a ton of good during ww2. They just took it a hair too far"
"Ranchers in TX should be allowed to shoot immigrants in the head"
"There used to be Venezuelan migrants near my hometown in xxxxx, but not anymore. Nope, my friends there put them in shallow graves and nobody knows where they are"

I would just stay quiet during this and his pro-trump political rants. But last week, he spouted off in a meeting with a supplier "Immigrants should be given the puff-the-magic dragon treatment. This is how soldiers during the gulf war referred to the gunships that could pulverize people"

The last one was the no-second-chances line for me due to him bringing it out into the open with business partners, and the next day I told him we were terminating his retainer. I didn't give him specifics (my boss wanted to hide it under a budget excuse).

Did I overreact?

Nope, no overreaction. The guy deserved it. Work is no place for political discussion unless it’s specific to the work. I wouldn’t terminate someone for stating a political Opinion but if the opinion is racist, the. They’d likely be fired or at least given a warning that the next time would lead to a firing.

Nope, no overreaction. The guy deserved it. Work is no place for political discussion unless it’s specific to the work. I wouldn’t terminate someone for stating a political Opinion but if the opinion is racist, the. They’d likely be fired or at least given a warning that the next time would lead to a firing.

Agreed. Pretty much every place I've worked has had rules against that kind of offensive speech because of the hostile or toxic environment it creates.

Great story. Y'all have some wild meetings! Usually it’s banter about the weather or kids sports. This helps explain why Uncle Ted is more active here lately.

Sounds like you’re going out on a limb by terminating such a valuable consultant who’s also a blowhard psychopath. $6-8M/year is a pretty big deal. But nobody here can say if you overreacted. That’s between you and your God. Also your boss, and board. Good work giving the axe after the savings. I’m sure he’d still be helpful, but maybe not *that* helpful.

At a certain point, isn't this type of behavior a legal liability with the team he directly interacts with? It also doesn't set a good precedent for acceptable behavior with your team. But yeah, $6 to $8 mil is a chunk.

I'm not a business guy, but it seems like you could replace this guy with someone who doesn't talk politics (or murder) in such an open way. I can't speak to whether you over-reacted, but I wouldn't have liked the way the guy spoke. I probably would have tried to have a chat with him first, though. Maybe let him know that talking like that was going to be a problem if he continued going forward.

Also, I hope your contract with him could be cancelled for convenience.

Reading between the lines -- telling him it's a budget issue leads to believe a contract was up and not renewed.

Now that the horse race is over, I'm going to be watching the how the power struggle plays out between the "national libertarian" types in Ramaswamy and Musk with the "economic nationalists" in Carlson and Vance. Cabinet and advisor appointments will be telling. I really hope Vivek has more sway that Tucker.

He is certainly not what would traditionally be called a libertarian, but he is more positive on trade and suspicious of protectionism than the Tucker types. But he certainly has wrapped it in the nationalist frame.

He is not an anti-war type but is in favor of ending the war in Ukraine even if it means letting Russia keep some of the illegally annexed parts of Ukraine and keeping Ukraine out of NATO... Ukraine may not like this but they definitely won't like paying for their own war either.

$175B is a chunk of change, but I still think it's pennies on the dollar when it comes to bleeding the Gawdless Commies dry. I think ending the war and allowing Russia to consolidate their gains is extremely short sighted. Often interests abroad overlap with our interests at home.
