He says the repub party is 35-40% always Trump, 10% never Trump, and the rest will tolerate Trump, even though they may prefer someone else. He pointed out that many repub primaries are winner-take all, so even if Trump doesn't get the majority of the vote, he'll still get the delegates. Especially if, like you point out, other candidates split that never Trump and tolerate Trump vote. Trump controls the party at the national level and even at many state levels.

Repubs are still running scared or still value some kind of promise of power to doing the right thing.
