Although I have no doubt Trump has disparaged the military many times, I hate that this article will give fodder for those who already believe the liberal press would lie to discredit Trump. As if there aren't so many other immoral things that he's done. In the grand scale of Trump malignancy, him disparaging the military is pretty low. Which is saying something.

That's an odd response. This has now been vetted by so many witnesses and sources that one would have to be delusional to call it a lie. Given the collaboration, why would you hate the article and think it will "give fodder"?

Yes, he has done a whole host of immoral things, but repeatedly disrespecting those who gave everything for our country seems like a new low. It makes my blood boil.

I should be more clear. The anonymous sources (if they remain so) are what will encourage Trump supporters to completely reject this, and make them even more obstinate about rejecting news sources. I would love for someone to go on record, that his supporters could believe. But then again, most would likely remain unconvinced.

This isn't a new low IMO. He's vilified gold star families and veterans who only disagree with him before. And yes it is disgusting, but I still think he's done worse.

Not just Trump supporters. Anonymously sourced political rumors like this are worthless. Put your name behind it or shut up.

Lol. After what Trump said about McCain, do you have any doubt whatsoever that he would say what has been alleged? Good heavens, his comments on video about POWs not being real heroes is beyond disgusting.

exactly. Even if he didn't say exactly what is being reported, we all know he has said something close enough that the distinction is one without a difference. Whether or not you think Trump is a better option than Biden for some reason, Trump is nonetheless a loathsome person.

You're trolling. I concur that nameless sources are not very compelling, but Trump is on record as saying almost the exact same thing about John McCain. It is not stretch nor is it even inconsistent with his character, which is a very sad comment.

Yes, this is exactly how it's playing out on social media. This is standard human tribal nature again. If there is any argument whatsoever that can be used to remain loyal to the tribe, the human brain will use it. The anonymous part disallows it from serious consideration by loyal tribalists.

Yes. While anonymous sources should always be viewed more critically than those on the record, they can serve an important purpose (Hello, Deep Throat!). One needs to examine the statements critically, and if they fit a pattern, aren't contradicted by other evidence, etc., they should not be discounted. And yet in Trump's case, these reports are becoming surplusage. News that Trump has said something despicable is pretty much in the "dog bites man" category.

It's not just you. It's not just me. It's not just Trump supporters.

                            https://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/13/o...s-sources.html

ERIC Schmitt remembers being surprised when, as a member of a Times newsroom committee on reporting practices, he was given information about what bothered readers of The Times most. It wasn’t political bias, or factual errors, or delivery problems.

“The No. 1 complaint, far and away, was anonymous sources,” Mr. Schmitt, a longtime and well-respected national security reporter in the Washington bureau, told me last week. “It goes to the heart of our credibility.”

The committee’s 2004 report followed two damaging episodes at The Times: the flawed reporting in the run-up to the Iraq war and the dishonesty of the rogue reporter Jayson Blair. That report reminded journalists to use anonymous sources sparingly. The current stylebook puts it this way: “Anonymity is a last resort.”
