This speech was a kind of epic poem, actually. Trump a bard. Our Homer. Who would have thought.Last edited by SeattleUte; 07-05-2019, 09:39 PM.When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

the rhetorical gymnastics employed here is fantastic. Trump didn't slip up and eat a booger or something did he? Can we pretend he did so I can hear the obvious genius meaning behind it that I missed?

The thing about great literature is one always gleans new insights with repeated readings. For example, I was surprised to re-read the Longfellow poem and find that Paul Revere instructed his friend, "One if by land, two if by sea, three if by air..."Originally posted by Commando View Post

Oh dear. It's not your first petty jab at me, so that's nothing new, but thanks for the sanctamony. If you find Ted's collection of conspiracy and altright tweets insightful you should expose yourself to more legitimate media.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View Post
That is my post 4th of July thoughts so now you and Frank and Commando can go back to your cyber communal marginal circle jerking about all things Trump while Uncle Ted reminds us all that the left might be even dumber.Last edited by frank ryan; 07-06-2019, 12:38 PM.

I don't worry about fascism or totalitarianism as much as I worry about anarchy that results from total loss of faith in a governing system/legitimacy.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostI'm most of the way through volume I of Richard J. Evans's non-fiction trilogy on the history of Nazi Germany, treating the rise of Nazi Germany. It's a good thing to read right now, with all the loose talk about fascism. It's actually put me at ease about all this identity politics. It seems clear to me that a pre-condition to fascism is a critical mass of the population--an overwhelming majority--who share a racial identity and connection to the soil. The shared Volk (blood) and soil were critical to success of the Nazi movement. Much the same, for that matter, was true of bolshevism (recently I read a great book on that movement). (The left uses Hitler as precedent to raise the specter that Trump could dismantle democracy and force us all into fascism against our will. This mis-understands Nazi history. Nazis overall followed Hitler willingly; in fact, as a practical matter, democracy was all but dead when Hindenburg appointed him Chancellor and Germans had had limited history with successful democracy. The Weimar Republic was blamed for taking a dive in WWI; for the Versailles treaty; and for the ensuing economic hell.)
The allure of the collective, to the extent that you are agreeable to sacrificing your separate identity, is that the commune has this shared history and blood. (I'm sure LDS can relate to this.) I continue to believe that capitalism's success is the strongest bulwark possible against totalitarianism, a pre-condition to which seems to be truly dire economic conditions that affects everyone. Hunger, homelessness, joblessness, on a mass scale, that sort of thing. We need to satisfy basic needs including education before liberty is attainable, history seems to teach. But I also think that our country's multiple sharply defined identities as well helps. Probably any one of these factions might try to establish fascism, but together it seems structurally impossible. Fascism could be possible in Utah, but not in the United States. There's so much diversity, and even its toxicity helps to defeat any successful movement toward a totalitarian collective.
I have always been a lot more concerned about creeping totalitarianism because of the left's political success than the right's.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

Although, frank's "legitimate" media sources had him injecting Avenatti into his veins and other such ridiculousness. frank still believes President Trump stole the election with the help of "The Russians" ffs. So it is quite amusing he lectures the likes of UT about media sources.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostFrank, I don't think he was talking about you per se.You're actually pretty funny when you aren't being a complete a-hole....so basically like 5% of the time. --Art Vandelay

Well dammit... there goes our three extra representatives, electoral votes, and bonus federal money.

Hmm.Originally posted by Commando View PostWhy wouldn't progressives be happy with this bill? Hasn't Trump shown he can be trusted to not fuck over immigrants at every opportunity? I mean sure he just sent attorneys to the 9th Circuit to argue with a straight face that they don't need soap, toothbrushes, or blankets in those cages, but that's just the 'Fart of the Deal' hard at work!

Hopefully Mississippi and Louisiana will get to count all these extra people on the upcoming census... they could use the extra federal money.Originally posted by Commando View Post"If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

What did you expect them to do in the first week? Build a five star hotel?Originally posted by Commando View Post"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. So the Supreme Court blocks Trump from adding the citizenship question to census, but he is going to do it anyway? Seems problematic.
President Donald Trump is expected to announce Thursday that he is taking executive action to add a citizenship question to the census, according to an administration official.
Trump tweeted that he will hold a press conference in the afternoon to discuss his latest efforts at including the question as part of the census.
"The White House will be hosting a very big and very important Social Media Summit today," Trump tweeted. "Would I have become President without Social Media? Yes (probably)! At its conclusion, we will all go to the beautiful Rose Garden for a News Conference on the Census and Citizenship."
NBC News confirmed that at the news conference, the president is expected to announce his executive action to add the question.
Last week, Trump told reporters on the White House South Lawn when asked if he would issue an executive order: "We're thinking about doing that."
"It's one of the ways," he added. "We have four or five ways we can do it. It's one of the ways and we're thinking about doing it very seriously."
The news conference planned for Thursday comes as two federal judges refused to let the Department of Justice withdraw lawyers from a lawsuit over the Trump administration's plans to put the citizenship question on the 2020 census form.

It's not problematic for Republicans who have long decided they're ok with this President breaking the law.Originally posted by frank ryan View PostSo the Supreme Court blocks Trump from adding the citizenship question to census, but he is going to do it anyway? Seems problematic.

But willfully ignoring and purposely going against a Supreme Court ruling by the President is grounds for impeachment on its own, IMO. We have no Constitutional separation of powers if he's allowed to do it.

Hell yeah it is going to be problematic! Texas is going to lose three representatives and electoral college votes. Not to mention billions a year.
