Those legislators could've and should've told Trump to go to hell and gone ahead with their compromise. He wants to put it on Congress to do something, so do it. See if he vetoes it now. If he does, see about getting enough votes to make it so he can't veto it. Right no, Congress has a unique opportunity. A LOT of people are pissed about the border situation and families being separated. Come up with a good compromise neither side loves but that both can accept, and it'll be backed by the people. Come election time in a couple of months, no one wants to be the guy who said screw kids and screw families. Take a risk. Quit relying on the moron in the Whitehouse to take action.Originally posted by BlueK View PostI believe we would have made a good first step in immigration reform had our president allowed that bipartisan group of legislators who sat in his office with him in front of the cameras and then came up with an actual compromise, if he had given it his approval the way he said he would. But no, he goes back and listens to the Kelly's and Miller's hanging out around him and basically went back and told those legislators to go to hell. That compromise probably would have passed both houses and been supported by a majority of Americans. That was a rare good faith effort by some influential members of Congress in that moment to get something constructive done. I think it's a shame the leadership in the executive branch to foster an environment in the country that is less, not more divisive, just doesn't seem to be at all what he wants. Is it too "apocalyptic" to be concerned about the direction this is going for the country?
Maybe it isn't jail. Maybe they're just being provided food and housing in a location specifically provided for people who don't have the legal right to be in the country. They should be allowed to leave to return to their country of origin whenever they like!Originally posted by Commando View PostIt's a misdemeanor that isn't even typically prosecuted- let alone punished with jail. DHS is usually the one detaining asylum seekers for the duration of their case. Under Obama entire families were jailed for years. If a person doesn't have an asylum case they are given an expedited removal with advisals that future unlawful entries after the removal constitutes a felony and they could face 30 to 180 days in federal prison (typically).
So yes. Since they are not being charged with a crime I would like an explanation why they are in jail.
(I kid...I kid...)

So - this morning on the radio someone was being interviewed and said that in spite of what you might hear from some sources, around 99% of all "illegal immigrants" show up for their eventual hearing if they are allowed to leave detention - as per ICE. They also mentioned that there is more and more electronic monitoring being done with ankle bracelets to know where people are if they don't show - which is a whole lot more cost effective than detention. That was news to me.Originally posted by falafel View PostWell, they might not be prosecuted, but they are charged, no? Also, if you don't detain them, how would you prosecute? They aren't just going to hang around in the same city or state waiting for punishment. If you let them go, you'll never see them again.
Seems like there are solutions out there, if they are willing to start utilizing them more.

No. They aren't charged on a first time offense, typically, because it has no teeth. That is, until like a month ago. They have always been remanded to DHS custody, who would effect their removal or screen and process them for asylum.Originally posted by falafel View PostWell, they might not be prosecuted, but they are charged, no? You have no idea what a bleeding heart I am. In fact, I actually oppose families being tortured by the U.S. government by having their tender kids ripped from their arms to leverage them into giving up their asylum claims.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostYeah... Frank, Max, Commando, et.el. all think we just need to open the flood gate and tell all the central american countries we will take all the kids they will send us. Of course, they have to make their way through Mexico, etc. first without being killed, made into sex slaves, or something but, hey, they have their parent's cell phone numbers written on their t-shirts so they will be OK.
Frank, Max Commando, BK: How many have these kids have y'all personally adopted now? Given y'all are the bleeding heart types I am guessing at least 20 each.

ankle monitor seems to be a good option. I just worry the EO is asking to get rid of the 20 day limit for holding which can mean they can hold indefinitely.Originally posted by creekster View PostPrior to conviction? With reasonable security and a consistent approach, makes sense.
. btw what conviction do you speak of, crossing border assuming they dont qualify for asylum?

How exactly do you know that the kid that was ripped from their arms is actually theirs and they are just using the kid as some "pawn" (as part of their sex trafficking business)? Oh, because the crying Rachel Maddow told you so... got it. Please keep in mind the vast majority of these kids don't have parents with them. Only 2,000 of the 12,000 currently.Originally posted by Commando View PostYou have no idea what a bleeding heart I am. Yeah, I may be wrong about you... I now suspect you have personally adopted at least 30 of the 10,000+ kids without parents, amirite? So where do the other 9,970 go? Do they give $10 and turn them loose on the streets of El Paso or Brownsville? Then what about the 100,000+ kids that follow when the word gets out that the doors are open."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

that 2,000 out of 12,000 was made up by trump admin with zero evidence.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostHow exactly do you know that the kid that was ripped from their arms is actually theirs and they are just using the kid as some "pawn" (as part of their sex trafficking business)? They are detained by DHS with no hope for release for anybody until the conclusion of the case under current policy. That is new.Originally posted by creekster View PostOK.
