  • This Mark Sanford Thing

It strikes me as being rather odd. Today we find out that he was not, in fact, in Appalachia, but instead was in Argentina. Argentina?? Over Father's Day weekend without the kids or the spouse? Weird. I know the man is entitled to some privacy, but disappearing just seems to be erratic behavior. Maybe he really doesn't have his eyes set on a presidental run, because if he does, this is really unadvisable behavior.

Yes, very strange. I think he can kiss a presidential run goodbye.

    Powell - check
    Ensign - check
    Sanford - check
    Palin - almost check
    Huckabee - pending
    Barber - pending
    Jindal - pending
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Jindal would be interesting. I wish "aww shucksabee" would go away, Palin as well.

I think Jindal lacks the clout. I think the main thing going for him was the diversity card, but after his disasterous rebuttal a few months ago, he lost a lot of steam and support. He's young and energetic, but I don't see a lot of people still standing behind him.

And I really wish Palin and Huckabee would just get the f*** out. They are lightweights and opportunists and do the Republican party a disservice.

              Jindal's public speaking ability sucks.

If he can't fix that, he's dead in the water.

I think Romney is still one of the best choices out there.

There you go, another unfaithful politician.

Again, at least he didn't bring his wife out. It looks like Repubs are good about that.

Jindal does lack clout, but he is going to be a player for awhile. Amen on Palin and Huckabee. Honestly, where does Romney fit unto the current foray. He has been keeping his head down.

Not surprising. Philandering and politics have always gone hand in hand. It's just harder to hide it these days. Of course, it's tough to hide when you take a weekender to Buenos Aires without the wife and kids over Father's Day weekend.

I have a pet theory on why he stepped down when he did. I think the republican party saw the writing on the wall that they were going to lose in 2008. They saw Romney as a legitimate candidate for the future, but didn't want to see him bloodied and diminished in a losing ccampaign. So they asked Mitt to step aside and let McCain get the nomination as a sort of "you've been trying long enough so its your turn" gesture(ala Dole '96), and offered him up as a sacrificial lamb to Obamamania.

Bill Clinton had a disastorious speech at the 88 convention. When he declared in 92 every pundit was commenting on it. He still won the presidency.

So you can overcome a bad speech, but all of the cards must break your way.

As many times as I've heard this theory, and as much as I'd like to believe it, I can't help but believe that it's more than a fabrication by Romney supporters who don't want to admit that Mitt is too robotic and unpersonable to ever get the support necessary to be the party front man. Oh, and too Mormon.

Or he saw that there was no realistic path to the nomination and like the smart businessman that he is, cut his losses.

It didn't seem like either party saw the writing on the wall back in February. They were still both focused on the war in Iraq back then.
