You don't think that will just make them go further right? I mean, I guess technically that is change. Have you considered that maybe the GOP elected a tyrant/facist/despot in hopes that the Dems would change? IMO, this attitude is a) 100% of what's wrong with American politics and a 2-party system, and b) 100% the reason Trump won. But go ahead. Trot Warren or Bernie out and watch Trump get 4 more years. Or do us all a favor and put of a candidate we can stomach. That's a pretty fucking low threshold, quite frankly.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostDesperate times call for desperate measures. Don't get me started on the 2 party system. I would love for the US to join the rest of the developed world and adopt a parliamentary democracy. I would also love a bunch of other things to change. But that's not happening anytime soon, so I'm just looking at ways to make the 2 party system a little better.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostYou don't think that will just make them go further right? I think that if a socialist won with a bare majority your point would probably be right. Politics would just cycle again. I still think a lot of the national GOP leadership would be forced out if Trump lost in 2020, and that in and of itself would help change the party. But what I'm gunning for is a landslide win, a la Reagan in 1984. That would be an entirely different thing. A humiliating defeat including republican strongholds would force the GOP to change at all levels, from the primary and nomination process on up. Even throw in some superdelegates so another Trump run can be prevented.
Of course, this is just dreaming. There's not going to be a landslide. But I'll keep banging this drum. I'm the pinko commie, so I don't need to hold my nose that much when I vote anyone but Trump, but I still strongly believe we need (at least) two functioning national political parties. One has thoroughly debased itself and needs some time in the desert. Hopefully that would be enough to reform itself."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Mirror bro. Look in a mirror. Both parties have debased themselves. But the one who just spent 4 years in the desert has a chance to reform itself and send the other to the desert.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostDon't get me started on the 2 party system. Fine. Both parties are corrupt. But one is currently much worse. It's leader is generationally bad and immoral. The other party might nominate buffoons, but it's been a while since it had someone as so immoral as Trump at its head.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostMirror bro. Look in a mirror. You have far too much faith in politicians. The democrats insistence on trying to rig the election for Hillary resulted in Trump's election. Did they learn their lesson and moderate to win elections. Hell no they didn't, they double, tripled, nay, even quadrupled down and have put forth the crazies from their party and are set to lose another election in 2020.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostDesperate times call for desperate measures. What in the world makes you think that losing in 2020 will help the republican party shape up at all?

this. so much this. Trump would get obliterated if the left could swallow a moderate candidate. They don't even have to be truly moderate they just need not be nearly communist.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostMirror bro. Look in a mirror. Both parties have debased themselves. I'm just looking for quick ways to erase the very memory of Trump being a national leader. I know what I'm saying is much more wishful than practical, but I just came off a swish in the world series thread. So don't be too surprised if even a socialist pulls it off in 2020!
But let me ask you this: other than a crushing defeat, what makes you think the republicans will change their current status as Trump's party? Certainly not another narrow win."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? You know what 100% guaranteed will not make the GOP change their current status as Trump's party? A Trump 2020 win. Focus on that for now, and figure out the rest later.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View Post

Nothing. They aren't going to change just as the Democrats have shown.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostI have no faith in politicians.

If that happens, then a crushing GOP defeat in 2024 will do the trick. I just want it to happen now. All I need is for you, Moli, Iman, and a few million others to hold their noses and vote for the socialist (if him or her survives the primaries). It can be done!Originally posted by Donuthole View PostYou know what 100% guaranteed will not make the GOP change their current status as Trump's party? A Trump 2020 win. But seriously, yes, a more electable democrat in 2020 does make it easier.
