I wonder how many academics, by percentage, would be forced out if an enterprising young person unleashed an AI that could detect plagiarism on all their published works. I’d bet at least 20%.

I don't agree with that, but if it was true then Gay should have been fired even absent the plagiarism revelations.

It doesn't matter what the main role of a president is, or whether plagiarism is common, at a University there has to be zero tolerance for plagiarism. That's a no-brainer.

And apparently it was discovered back in October prior to her testimony, but it didn't get much traction in the media then.

I’ve actually talked a lot about this with multiple college professors across multiple campuses and most seemed to scoff at the academic bonafides of the president. I assumed that most felt similarly, a president is there to drive apps and get big checks. I only reference this because Harvard hasn’t been hurting app wise or donation wise. If the money train was struggling I’m sure she would’ve been gone months ago.

I don’t know the level of plagiarism that is acceptable, i know a lot of college professors they don’t strike me as more honest than the average person which would make me think that a significant chunk of them ‘cheat’ at some level. I’m ignorant to what level is deemed oversight and fixable vs work that crosses over to intellectual theft.

I think she should’ve been fired, I’m sure there are kids kicked out of Harvard every year for less egregious offenses. I do think her ‘scalp’ means more to the culture warriors because she’s black and it reinforces certain viewpoints. This isn’t the first time Harvard’s presidents have been targeted by republican politicians and it won’t be the last, McCarthy was a crusader of this 70 years ago.

It’s such a weird culture war, elites who attended these exclusive schools getting the plebs who have almost zero chance of acceptance, to care about the CV of the presidents of these institutions.

Gay didn't lose her job because she is black. She lost her job because of her horrendous responses to the congressional hearing and because of extensive plagiarism. She might have survived the fallout from the hearing (unlike her white counterpart from Penn), but the plagiarism was a bridge too far. Any attempt to pin this on racism, etc is BS.

As I have said before, prior to the hearings/plagiarism, I was quite impressed with her leadership and was sad to see her crash and burn so badly.

Her poor answers during the congressional hearing, like those of the other college presidents, upset the rich donors who threatened to stop writing checks. Harvard tried to hold on a little longer, but the plagiarism allegations kept the spotlight on her, which kept the donors perturbed.

Why should people care if the president of Harvard engaged in plagiarism? Seriously?

To ignore her race in this episode is malpractice, of course it played a part. It’s all part of the DEI blast that Ruffo and DeSantis and everyone on Fox has been railing on about for years. But nobody with a brain doesn’t think it’s racist she was fired for plagiarism.

It’s a weird culture war moment. She found sympathies with other academics when this was first exposed, I’m assuming because a lot more academics plagiarize or maybe it wasn’t as as egregious as portrayed, the Israeli stuff was bad but in its context isn’t horrible. If you watch the exchange her answer sounded like corporate lawyer speak protecting the 1a.

I wonder if the Washington Free Beacon spent as much time trying to rid the world of Claudine Gay as they did exposing Trump, Ron DeSantis and any of the other lackeys who support him, maybe the conservative movement could wrestle back some level of legitimacy. In the meantime, all the rest of the normal 98% of people who could never get in Harvard, will go about our lives not knowing who any president of Harvard is except the one from the Social Network.
