  • Jason Chaffetz, Speaker of the House?

Apparently, Kevin McCarthy's idiotic gaffe is making people question whether it's a good idea to install him as Speaker.

A number of high profile member of the House have ruled out going for the position, e.g Paul Ryan.

So Jason Chaffetz has thrown his hat in the ring. I can't begin to wrap my head around that windbag becoming the Speaker. But congrats to Utah County nevertheless if it happens
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Not a huge fan of his politically, but hey, didn't he once kick a winning field goal in a BYU bowl game?

He's also half-brothers with Michael Dukakis's kid. I just read his wikipedia profile so no one else has to.

The secret service needs to stop him once and for all. No half-ass efforts of just leaking stuff to the press this time.

I'm not sure what 36 year-old Chaffetz was thinking when applying for the Secret Service. Aren't those guys expected to have some fairly advanced weapons training along with some kind of intelligence and/or military or federal law enforcement background? The secret service guys were mocking him because he wasn't hired, but I think his initial decision to apply seems like the more mockworthy fact.

I don't think so. Maybe it is preferred for those selected to the more important protection details, but I don't think that is a blanket requirement.

Do you think Chaffetz was applying for the fraud against the Treasury part of it? I imagine he wanted to be in the security detail side of it and that would have to require some kind of background in the FBI, military, CIA, NSA, etc. Chaffetz has a BA in Communications and worked for Nu Skin.

He should most likely put "kick a winning field goal in a BYU bowl game" at the top of his resume.

I don't think you really can say "I'm only apply to protect the president." That's like going to the police academy, but only if you are assigned to SWAT.

Plus, I doubt Chaffetz is into hookers and coke.

I mentioned in the Michigan game thread that I think I saw him. He was walking up the aisle next to my seats. I can't trust a guy who wears a suit to a football game.
