Maybe the Russians hacked his foot. One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

I believe religion has much inherent good and has born many good fruits.

I'm a bad person because I know schadenfreude is a sin, but it's so damned satisfying, even if there's no proof of a scandal."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.

It would be interesting to know the price of that metal. What looks like something you could get at Home Depot for a few bucks almost certainly has a hospital sticker price into the thousands. Of course, if Chaffetz in fact got his from Home Depot that might explain the infection.Originally posted by hostile View PostThat metal is Swiss

I was hoping you'd comment on this. His explanation is nutty and makes me wonder if he simply has nobody "on his side" to run his ideas/story by right now. Sometimes I'm more bothered by the sloppiness of a scandal than I am by the scandal itself (I'm looking at you Tiger Woods).Originally posted by hostile View PostHe may very well be having surgery on his foot. It just sounds weird how he explained it. If the hardware is at risk for infection now why wasn't it risk last year, or the year before that. It has been in his foot for 12 years. I put in a lot of hardware and I haven't ever taken it out except in the event of a real infection or some other demonstrable event - broken hardware, bone hasn't healed, hardware is painful. It seems fishy to me.

I think the hospital pays around $80-90 for each screw and the mark up to the patient/insurance is 4-500%.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostIt would be interesting to know the price of that metal. Is there an option for the consumer to bring their own screws?Originally posted by hostile View PostI think the hospital pays around $80-90 for each screw and the mark up to the patient/insurance is 4-500%.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Not in the US. Hospitals wouldn't accept the liability. There are some places in the world where the patient has to acquire the implant then the hospital will sterilize it. We send a lot of used trauma implants around the world to be reimplantedOriginally posted by falafel View PostIs there an option for the consumer to bring their own screws?"You interns are like swallows. When I had my clavicle surgically repaired 10 years ago, the bills I got priced the metal plate at $1000, and each of the 9 screws at $250.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostIt would be interesting to know the price of that metal. That's about right, but the cost does vary and it gets even higher. About a decade ago I did an inventory inspection at a hospital and saw the cost and price of the hardware. The markup is huge (like hostile mentioned) but the cost to the hospital was outrageous. In what was kind of funny and weird, the hospital kept the screws and such in bins similar to what you'd find at Home Depot, although they were obviously locked down and not readily accessible to the random employee waking trough.Originally posted by chrisrenrut View PostWhen I had my clavicle surgically repaired 10 years ago, the bills I got priced the metal plate at $1000, and each of the 9 screws at $250.
I also got to do the Fas 5 review of currently outstanding legal claims against the hospital. If 50% of the stuff I read in those files is true, then there are some crazily incompetent surgeons out there. One guy claimed to have had a small tool left in him when the sewed him up

So it appears that Chaffetz is quitting Congress to start a new gig with Fox News.

So much for the "I need to spend more time with family" excuse.

Might as well get paid the big bucks for all that time he is spending away from the fam. He'll be a one and done. Then he can spend time with the fam.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostSo it appears that Chaffetz is quitting Congress to start a new gig with Fox News.

Yeah, that was all pretty sordid speculation, and it appears baseless.Originally posted by creekster View PostWas there any basis to the earlier specualtion that he was involved in some sot of scandal that was going to break lose?Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
