It seems the Dems are giving the control of the house and senate to the GOP'ers after the midterms for even proposing such as idea as this.

But yeah, theoretically they could pass a law that would say they won't replace anyone who retires or dies until they reach the number they want. Most likely what they will do next is refuse to confirm anyone the next time a dem president is in office with a gop senate.
But if Lifetime appointments are written into the constitution (or wherever), isnt 9 justices also specified? No answer needed, I am going to listen to Lebowski and not worry about it until it transitions to real news.

No, the number of justices on the SC is not prescribed in the Constitution. But I think the most likely threat and problem right now is the culture mostly on the gop side. Let's be honest, they didn't allow a vote on Garland but had no problem pushing through their nominee in two weeks. It's probably gotten now to where we will not see another dem president's nominee confirmed again by a gop senate.

no, in fact the original court had 6 justices. There’s nothing sacred about the number; the angst comes from one party filling a bunch of newly created seats.

Come on. We have been at 9 for 152 years. It took a few years to settle on that number, but we have stayed at that number because everyone recognizes that a fluid number would be incredibly damaging in the long run.

Yes, there is nothing sacred about 9, but there is something sacred about not changing the number to skew the court when your party is in power.

I've kind of checked out of the culture war heavy political battles recently, but have the people specified how they will go about filling the 4 seats? Is there a committee that will oversee candidates to make sure they aren't liberal or conservative? Are they suggesting two dem picks and two GOP picks? Because anything short of this is nakedly a power grab and is completely indefensible.

No, I thought it was obvious the Dems want to get rid of the filibuster. It's racist... except when the Dems use it.

lol. You still think Democrats are good at setting their own agenda and following through? They're still jumping at Trump's shadow. I hate to say it, but I'm really thinking it would have been a lot better had Bernie beaten Trump instead of Biden. Biden's done a couple of nice things but on some of the issues that matter to me he's been absolutely positively incompetent x10000.
