Supreme Court on ethics issues: Not broken, no fix needed

The Supreme Court is speaking with one voice in response to recent criticism of the justices’ ethical practices: No need to fix what isn’t broken.

The justices’ response on Tuesday struck some critics and ethics experts as tone deaf at a time of heightened attention on the justices’ travel and private business transactions. That comes against the backdrop of a historic dip in public approval as measured by opinion polls.

Deeply divided on some of the most contentious issues of the day — including abortion, gun rights and the place of religion in public life — the court’s six conservatives and three liberals seem united on this particular principle: on ethics they will set their own rules and police themselves.

Charles Geyh, an Indiana University law professor and legal ethics expert, said everything the justices detailed Tuesday evening about ethics was essentially outlined in Chief Justice John Roberts’ annual year-end report from 2011, more than a decade ago.

However filthy I believe Clarence Thomas to be, I do agree with you and appreciate that justices from both sides of the aisle came together and reached some kind of consensus, whether I agree with it or not.

I would even settle for a friend like Greg Werner, who apparently gave Thomas $1,200 in tires in 2002. Or the Dixons, who gave the boy they are raising $5k in educational assistance.

Look you guys, I know that you are unhappy with the makeup of the court. I know you are upset at the tactics of McConnell with Garland. I'm sure RBG not stepping down during Obama's presidency bugs you. And I understand Thomas has been despised more than any other justice by the left in living memory. But this bombastic, hyperbolic, and inequitable treatment of conservative appointed judges has done nothing but ensured the the right's support of them and weakened any good faith attempts at ethics reform.

Whatever genuine ethics objections have been delegitimized by the clearly targeted and coordinated campaign by the legacy media, democratic politicians, and partisan activists. At the end of this all you get is the left who believes the court is completely illegitimate and a right who lacks introspection.
