“Notwithstanding our theological differences, we are united in declaring that the traditional institution of marriage is indispensable to the welfare of the American family and society. We are also united in our belief that a decision requiring the States to license or recognize same-sex marriage would generate church-state conflicts that will imperil vital religious liberties. This brief is submitted out of our firm judgment that the Constitution does not require States to take that fateful step,”"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. I love the irony of MORMONS championing the traditional family. I find it interesting that the president of a public university would put his name with an amicus brief that was filed by an anti-gay marriage group. I don't care that he is against SSM, but when you are a public figure and represent a public institution it seems better judgment is in order.

Yes of course.Originally posted by cowboy View PostWould your opinion be different if he publicly supported Gay Marriage?
Supporting marriage equality for all citizens is OK.
Twenty years from now, maybe sooner, this anti-gay stuff will be as embarrassing as segregation.
CUF/CS knew this years ago. The Church and rest of the religious fanatics in this country will eventually catch up.

Just again for the record the stupidity and mean-spiritedness of the "Schaerr brief" is astounding. Really it just reflects so poorly on religion that 100 otherwise smart people would sign off on something like this:

I've asked myself the same question and have concluded that I can't honestly answer. However, since the current argument against SSM is in terms of its threat to the free exercise of religion, I do find it odd that he'd use his title to chime in on the brief.Originally posted by cowboy View PostWould your opinion be different if he publicly supported Gay Marriage?"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. It already is pretty embarrassing. I think many younger members (under 50) realize this and as such you aren't hearing much rhetoric out of them over the pulpit. The only people I hear still vocally digging in their heels on this issue tend to be older people that are either out of touch or reflective of a prior generation's thinking. Interestingly enough, these people almost always tend to be out of touch even with the most current statements of the Church, so in a very real sense these crazies are actually more hardline than the current Church stance.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostYes of course.

What a weird way to talk about being anti-gay marriage. You know people deep down are embarrassed by it because they won't even call it what it is.
