For some reason the church doesn't like to say the word gay. Most of the time they say "struggle with same gender attraction". It is pretty common in church discourse. I'm surprised you haven't heard it before.

    • When my son started school, he took a survey. On it, there was one question that asked for gender, and one that asked for sexual orientation. Between the two questions, there were something like a dozen choices. There were some in each category which, if I were to be perfectly honest, I would not be able to distinguish between (e.g. I am not able to really draw precise lines between some of genderqueer, intersex, transgender, transexual, female to male, and male to female). I try to be open-minded, but I admit I rolled my inner eye just a bit.

Having said that, this is just an embarrassment. It makes BYU look like Bob Jones U. To not even give the option of "LGBT" or something similar is mind-boggling. The option of "I am heterosexual, but I struggle with same-sex attraction." is doublespeak, as well as a poor reflection of how far behind BYU is in this area.

Of course, all this is assuming the survey is really something BYU did, and not made up by some bitter ex-mo, some of whom can be every bit as embarrassing as BYU.

        • looks like they updated the survey, much like they updated the official press release stating that the WoW does not prohibit caffeine.

I can confirm that the top question was indeed on the survey in Moliere's link a couple hours ago.

              It definitely was.

As can I. I actually took a picture of it to send to my sister, so I have proof on my phone.

Having said that, the question makes more sense the way it is written now. I could easily believe that it was a honest mistake and one answer was inadvertently left off, if it were not for the fact that BYU and the church has often said things about gay people that make no sense.

                • Yeah UvaCoug they changed it earlier today.

                  The choices should be:

                  1. Heterosexual
                  2. Homosexual
                  3. Bisexual

The whole "struggle with same-sex attraction" terminology is hilarious. Good hell, if you are a dude who likes dudes then you are either gay or bisexual, not a heterosexual who "struggles with same-sex attraction." Real heterosexual dudes find the idea of sex with another dude to be the most disgusting thing imaginable. The euphemisms crack me up -- glad whoever made that survey got called out on it and they fixed it, sort of.

                  • So can anyone take this poll and get entered to be picked to complete the longer 2.5 hour study? If so, I think all of CS should fill it out.

                      Or maybe they could add:

Homosexual, bisexual, or transgendered that does not struggle with same-sex attraction.

                      • They should just pray for the answers to be revealed at some point in the future.

                        • LOL at any BYU student dumb enough to answer anything other than heterosexual.

Unless that student is using a roommate's computer.

I'll take your word that they changed it. I'm not sure what you find offensive about asking BYU students who are attracted to the same sex whether they consider themselves as heterosexuals that are struggling or homosexuals. Seems like a pretty interesting question, if you ask me. Of course, that assumes that leaving the homosexual option out of the survey was a mistake (which is what I believe happened).
