It makes things a lot easier on the Church to have gay marriage legalized right? Glad that's over.
Now the Church on paper at least accepts celibate gays on the same terms as heterosexuals. Seems like the next step will be to treat a married gay person like we treat a person married to a non-member, except it will take a while to progress from letting a gay married person stay active and in a calling to eventually letting a gay person even have a temple recommend.
Then once people realize that it's no big deal to have gay married people at church I think there will eventually be gay temple marriages. I'm thinking that's about 50 years from now. Most of us will be dead or close to it.
I guess maybe I'm underestimating the degree to which some people in the Church might allow abstract theological concepts to continue to override common sense and hurt real people but I have enough faith in the goodness of Mormons that I think eventually kindness and decency will win out over homophobic theological tradition.
